That’s not a good enough reason. I don't care enough, either way. Yeah, IanTheCool. Fuck you. We all know the most important movie of 2012 is Prometheus.

The problem I personally always run into with this thread is trying to differentiate 'best' from 'important'. Hence why I rarely offer my two cents.

I can get on board with Django and The Raid. I think there's a case for Frances Ha but I'm not devoted enough to make it.

Django for sure.
For the other option to me it's between The Raid and Silver Linings.

Dunkirk shoulda won the Oscar for Nolan.
Shape of water should remain buried.

Get Out is a lock. Lady Bird should also be on contention for both establishing Gerwig as a director and also for just being widely beloved on its own. Call Me By Your Name seems a contender. Maybe Blade Runner 2049? Certainly feels like an important text for a new generation of "film bros." The Last Jedi is the definitive online discourse movie of the generation.

I think Wonder Woman is the superhero pick for this year.
Greatest Showman maybe? That one feels like it made a big impact on people who aren't movie snobs. Oh, and Paddington 2.

Wonder Woman probably warrants consideration but, I don't know, I don't mean to be snide but is being the first women-led superhero movie enough to justify inclusion in the list? Maybe. Greatest Showman was popular but I'm not sure it's particularly influential or special by itself. Then again I haven't seen it so maybe I'm wrong. I also haven't seen Paddington 2. It definitely has a hardcore contingent but I do wonder about the shelf life.

Call Me By Your Name: Seems to be a landmark film for gay dudes of a certain age. Lady Bird: Greta Gerwig seems like she's going places Get Out: Gave us "the sunken place." Greatest Showman: I think there's a good argument to be made that the financial success of this movie is what got musicals like In the Heights, Cats, West Side Story, and Wicked greenlit. Its soundtrack also provided a bunch of songs that have stuck around and are likely to be sung by "theater kids" for ages to come. Justice League: The movie that wouldn't go away.

Most important movie of 2017 is Geostorm. It paved the way for Doomsday and Baby Yoda.
