You have shown how it is genre-defying, but I can't help but think: so what? Simply defying genre convention doesn't necessarily make an interesting movie. Once again, good analysis. Fair point, but it's not just the genre defying which I think is impressive, but rather, the effect that defiance has. With Barry Lyndon, that genre subversion has me questioning individual importance and whether or not we have any real impact in life, or whether we're just passing through. That, to me, is a fascinating and troubling thing to dwell on. Whether we're good or bad, successes or failures, does any of it really matter? Regarding the morality question, it's telling that Lyndon loses everything after what is probably his most merciful act. These questions are the direct result of the way Kubrick undercuts how a period epic is typically supposed to function. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's not just the genre defying that impresses me, but the overall effect such defiance has and the questions it raises. Having said that, I do get why if these questions either don't jump out at you or don't interest you, the movie would read as a lot lesser. I can also get why after three hours, those messages seem a little empty. For me, that's the point, but I'm not so dedicated to my interpretation of the film that I can't also understand why other people wouldn't be as enamored as I am.

Well argued. As long as it serves a theme, though I didn't really read into that when I watched. Makes sense though.

Here are some titles I have for videos I'm thinking of making. Let me know what you might think of potential topics.
-Chinatown and the Acceptance of Evil
-Citizen Kane - A Textbook of Cinematic Conversation
-Martin Scorsese - Sympathy for Scoundrels
I was also thinking of doing some Halloween-themed video, but nothing has come to mind so far.

May I offer some advice? This is advice based on watching some of Nerd Writers stuff. he's quite good, but what I notice is that he uses the same serious tone of voice for every video instead of switching it up. When the video calls for more energy, maybe use more energy in your voice. I just think its odd when I watch a video he makes on movie credits and its still so somber and stoic.

Hey everybody. So here's something neat; I've been working as a teaching assistant this semester, teaching the intro to film course I took in 2013/14. Anyway, the profs have seen some of my work, we've used it in class, and I've even been grabbed some paid work making a video essay for the course on narrative and Vertigo. So yeah, that's pretty cool.
The only downside is that I usually spend about a month taking my time slowly putting together a video. For this though I got the gig Monday evening and needed the video done by Sunday. That's why I've been missing from the boards over the last few days, and especially the 31 Days of Halloween thread. On the plus side, I've learned a valuable lesson about how quickly I can throw together a video under constraints.

I took some notes from Fanible and Doomsday and decided to re-record the audio of my video on The Graduate (I also improved the visual quality). Content is the same as the old, but the presentation is dramatically better and would appreciate comments and suggestions. Plus, today is the film's 50th anniversary, so, you probably should watch it on principle. Dracula Deexan PhantomKnight IanTheCool Neverending Jibbs Wyldstaar Ramplate Frizzo the Clown thebtskink FShuttari Sculder frankyt daniel Dhamon22 I don't think I'll go back to touch up my Night of the Living Dead video. I feel a bit more sentimental towards it with it being my first video. I also think the scrappiness kinda works given NOTLD is one of those "little movies that could" and generally I think that video works better than my original Graduate upload. Plus, that's still one of the channel's more successful videos and I don't wanna remove it.

Content-wise I'd say it's mostly on point but you've done better work since making this one. It gets a bit bogged down in just reciting the plot of the movie and the stray observations about how the filmmaking that supports it are a bit... I don't want to say "obvious" but they aren't exactly groundbreaking insights into the film. My favorite of your videos was probably the one about The Matrix sequels, in part because that was the one that was sort of going against the grain of popular opinion and had more of a point to prove, that might be a better instinct to lean into with these.

Thanks for the feedback. The plot recitation is definitely an issue. The original impetus behind the video back in the day was the observation about the car window framing that connects the final shot with the Taft hotel. Originality the video was gonna be shorter and focus more strictly on that, but I got nervous about not having the context of the rest of the film, so I ended up leaning on the more traditional plot analysis and the way Benjamin is framed throughout the film. I have a similarish video in early planning stages now in that the broad analysis is fairly well-tread ground but there's one specific element I haven't heard really discussed before. Probably won't get to it for a while but I'll keep in mind to trim the more broad content. Maybe we Man of Steel fans can collaborate on a video defense of that if we're talking going against the grain. My enthusiasm for the film hasn't really wavered, though defending the movie so much can be exhausting.

This is definitely another quality video, but I echo Dracula's sentiments: your Matrix video has been my favorite thus far because of its angle. A video where you add on to the praises of an already widely-celebrated film can still be compelling as long as your passion for the subject is clear - such is the case here - but even more compelling is a video where you argue a viewpoint that's contrary to popular opinion. And I'd love to see you do another like that. If it proves to be "Why Man of Steel Is Great" or something, I'd be happy to help out. Or just eagerly watch/listen, whatever works.

My Barry Lyndon video is probably my favourite of my own. Especially since my argument was less, "the film is good" and more, "I like how the film expresses "x". Matrix was also fun though, and is an argument I've been putting forth since I was like, nine.
I definitely appreciate the feedback. I suspect my next video will be more echoing consensus (the film in question is a classic) and the argument isn't exactly revolutionary, but idk, there are aspects of the argument which aren't as common in the discourse and I really wanna make this one.

Jibbs Neverending Dracula PhantomKnight Doomsday Dhamon22 Fanible MC117 thebtskink Deexan Sculder IanTheCool FShuttari Frizzo the Clown frankyt So...I kind of have a favour to ask everyone. I don't know how obvious it was, but the channel I've been posting YouTube videos on for the last seven months was never actually mine. It was meant to be a group effort with lots of different content, but after over half a year of me being more or less the sole contributor, I've decided to take my content to its own channel, starting with reuploading all of my old videos. The downside is now I have to start from scratch in terms of building an audience. Anyway, even though I know many of you have already seen my old videos, I was hoping you'd be willing to watch them again as I repost them over the next few weeks, along with giving a like and subscribing to the new channel. Even if you just let the video play muted in another tab while you do something else, I'd really appreciate it and it'd help me out quite a bit. One good thing is having to repost everything encouraged me to update my first video. I always was really happy with how my Night of the Living Dead video turned out, but even more so now that it doesn't sound like trash. tl;dr: I have to re-upload all of my old videos over the next few weeks on a new channel and if everyone could give them another look, like, and subscribe to the new channel I'd really appreciate it.
