Re-upload of my Godfather video:
This will almost certainly be my last upload for 2017. Early next week I'll be re-posting The Graduate and then finally Barry Lyndon. Totally new content will also becoming very soon. I'm making good progress on my next video and my next script is also in early draft stages. Thank you to everyone here for the support, and for putting up with my tagging/pestering. It means a lot.

I'm not the biggest fan of the Wachowski brothers (sisters?) but I'm familiar with most of their work. I thought you presented a pretty interesting perspective that hadn't occurred to me, that the baddies of a lot of their movies are pulling strings from behind a curtain of secrecy and deception and it's up to the main character to expose it. I've always been unsure whether the Wachowskis are good filmmakers who have a miss every so often (Jupiter Ascending being a huge example) or if they're weak filmmakers who get lucky. I would never doubt that they have vision and a lot of the time it really works (Matrix, Cloud Atlas) but sometimes the vision can really bite them in the ass (again, Jupiter Ascending). I'll listen to your Matrix video next. I actually rewatched the first one a few weeks back and it holds up surprisingly well. I haven't watched 2 or 3 because, well, I'm afraid.

I really enjoyed this. It actually got me pumped for the Criterion re-release coming out in a few weeks. I've said before that I'm not much of a horror fan and it was only a few years ago when I first watched Night of the Living Dead which I loved. I do have to admit however that I have watched very, very little of the Hammer horror output. I think part of the reason is because I love the 20s-30s Universal horror films so much that I really had no interest in watching others where there was a well-known drop in quality. Even watching for comedic purposes never floated my boat but I feel like I should do an exploration of those movies some day.

Even watching for comedic purposes never floated my boat but I feel like I should do an exploration of those movies some day. Awesome! Glad you dug it. I too am stoked for the Criterion. I've been wanting a quality Blu release for a long time and was really hoping Criterion would eventually provide. I've seen a bit of Hammer and prefer Universal completely thus far, though I've heard some good stuff about their Mummy movies, namely from Neverending actually. Horror of Dracula is worth watching for the climax alone. I didn't make the linked video, so unfortunately I can't take credit. So is Eyebrow Cinema your channel? Yes. I used to have all my videos out under a channel called Gambit Entertainment, but have since moved everything under what is a potentially sillier channel name.

Excellent essay, really enjoyed it. I've never really questioned Gittes as a protagonist before, but you make some very strong points about him. You're right that the film bears its roots in its cynicism, especially in regards to the evil and powerful being punished in this world, and that Jake should know better than anyone that this is the case. But he's also a character plagued by the wrongs in his past, so blowing this case open on his own (remember also that Gittes has a very contentious relationship with the LAPD and Lou Escobar) in order to remedy those mistakes is very likely what propels him most to attempt to be the hero. Very strong point and conversation on the film which I think is made even more interesting being a noir. Typically in noirs, even if the bad guy wins or the protagonist is more of an anti-hero than a morally upright figure, there's some sense of justice that's constantly being carried out. In Chinatown, there really isn't. You get the sense that though Los Angeles at this point is a well-established city that it was almost operating on its own terms in its infancy, and powerful people like Noah Cross can go unchecked, and as you pointed out that's exactly what happens. The bad guys don't really lose anything here, while the "heroes" suffer great losses, all culminating in Evelyn's death at the end of the film.
Chinatown is a beautiful film that does present a romantic look at 1930s LA, but you're right that at its core it's a highly cynical film that doesn't compromise that stance.

Jake's efforts to save Evelyn being an attempt at redemption is something I hadn't really considered, but it does make sense. And yeah, the way Chinatown plunges even further down the cynical path of noirs is really compelling. Also, side note, I got my first super hateful comment on my Barry Lyndon video and I feel like I've passed a huge milestone. It's even funnier since it's clear the dude only watched the first 16 seconds of my video and angrily dumped out three paragraphs about how much he hates me.

Interesting chap.
