People still watch this show? If they aren't, they're missing out.

This show is fantastic. I'm amazed that more Breaking Bad fans don't tune in. I've said on several occasions 'what the hell is the matter with you?' to people who talk about BB but say 'eh I haven't watched any Better Call Saul.' Of the three shows I watch as they air, Walking Dead, Vikings and this, Better Call Saul is miles ahead of the other two.

Completely agree. What I love about this show and Breaking Bad is how they try out these truly cinematic techniques that other television shows don't even attempt. Like that awesome opening tracking shot of the truck going through customs a couple episodes ago, that was fantastic. And it never seems gimmicky or out of place, it all blends with the other aesthetic choices. Gilligan really is showing the rest of the television world that it's more than okay to be bold. I can't stand run-of-the-mill shit on television, which is why I'm far more invested in film and don't watch nearly as much television. But Gilligan, especially when you consider these shows aren't on HBO or others with less censorship and flexibility, is really standing above the rest with these aesthetic choices. The guy just simply gets it, and the results have been stellar.

The only show I would say is comparable to Gilligan's shows in terms of trying for that technique and a 'cinematic' feel is Fargo, however that show definitely feels gimmicky and out of place at times. It's a good show and the first season is great, the second season while still good feels like it's trying too hard. I've never felt that with Better Call Saul.

Yeah, whether it's time lapses or mounting the camera to something and letting the scene ride, the show just seems to tap into more interesting ways to develop. Even something simple like in the finale when the camera is vertical over Chuck but flipped gave the scene an unique quality. Where most shows would show shots of doctors pushing him along or standard shots over him, the idea to flip the vertical shot and keep the take solely on him was so much more effective. It demonstrated Chuck's fear and kept us tight on the action that actually mattered. Little things like that might not seem to be much, but it's yet another example of Gilligan going the extra mile. And all of it is so subtle in its execution; the camera gliding through these actions seamlessly without reliance on smashing zooms or cuts. It's really refreshing to see a TV show outdoing most films in terms of technical prestige. I almost feel like these elements of Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad aren't celebrated enough.

That Chuck shot really ramped up the feelings of anxiety. I was shocked at how well done it was.

Because Saul Goodman isn't interesting enough to lead a TV series - or at least that was the case in season one.

But it's not Saul Goodman, it's Jimmy McGill and a great supporting cast.

Critics and audiences would disagree with you. Also, it's been this good and we haven't even gotten into the actual character and wild associations of Saul Goodman yet. This show has been very strong and only seems to be getting better.

I actually watched the finale just a few days ago. I was not expecting a cliffhanger finale like what we were given. Michael McKean deserves an Emmy/Golden Globe/whatever nomination.

Mike moves with as much force and grace as my dead grandfather. People need to stop praising his acting too, anyone can play the brooding smug angle.
That final episode was kind of shitty, but I still like the show a lot. Odenkirk can do no wrong anymore seems like.

Like I said last year, the Mike-centric episode from season 1 is as good as (almost) any episode from Breaking Bad.
It came to me a while after watching the finale but one thing I liked about it was that it's the first time we've seen Mike fuck up. Sure he miscalculated the Salamanca situation but this is the first time we've seen him seemingly caught with his pants down. It's a small thing but it adds a bit to his character that we are also watching evolve along with Jimmy's. Lest we forget, he's a piece of shit in Breaking Bad. A cool character but a murderous hitman nonetheless. We have to watch that journey happen as well.

Wow, this season has been blowing everything else I'm watching completely out of the water.
The Gus-centric episode was better than any Gus episodes on Breaking Bad, and the Chuck storyline has been one of the best law-centric storylines I have seen in years.
I hope this season brings this show some Emmys and comes out of the shadow Breaking Bad is casting with the general public.

I actually caught up just a couple hours ago by watching the last 4 episodes. Man this show is great, like I said last year Michael McKean deserves an Emmy.

Agreed, this has been the best season by far and has felt the closest in terms of sheer tension and suspense to Breaking Bad. Why people still aren't watching this show is beyond me, it's fantastic. That episode where the first half was solely focused on Gus is still my favorite so far this season.

That episode where the first half was solely focused on Gus is still my favorite so far this season. Best episodes are the ones not focusing on Jimmy. You can see why people don't give a shit about this show. It's more Joey than Frasier.

I like Jimmy's progression - this last episode showed how he has had grit, but also been under a number of people's thumbs, making him come across as a fool. But, then, I would say he had his first great moment where we saw him deftly subvert the law by winning a case where he was entirely guilty and deserved the law to come down on him. That's what Saul Goodman is known for - confidence in the face of gross misconduct, and this was the episode that showed him step into that light and begin his journey into Saul. When the "upcoming episode" preview was shared, I was thrilled to hear the name "Saul Goodman" for the first time. It felt appropriate and timely.
The writing on this show is top-notch. I have not had a single criticism all season long and still continue to enjoy this more than Breaking Bad.

I'm also curious if there is a Biblical reference in transforming him into Saul. In the Bible, Saul becomes Paul when he becomes a Christian. Here, Jimmy gets away with breaking the law, and then becomes Saul....
I'm also curious if Saul is dead in present-day. He had that collapse in the store on the first episode, and we haven't seen him in present day again since.

Just finished the season, and geez...this is definitely one of if not the best show on television right now as far as I'm concerned. This is how you do a deliberately-paced show, because it actually feels it gets to something by the time you're done *coughTheAmericanscough*. I for one still think Jimmy's an interesting character and am as invested in his arc as I am those of all the other main players. And I agree with you guys -- Michael McKean NEEDS an Emmy for this show. The last scene of the season was so powerful -- and without any dialogue.

Yeah, this show really needs to be the dark horse at the Emmys this year - it's not getting talked about nearly as much as other shows that are nowhere near this in terms of quality. It's like people forgot that Vince Gilligan is an incredible writer and stopped paying attention to his material. I find this show entirely more satisfying than Breaking Bad and can't wait for the next season.
