FRIENDLY REMINDER: The show premieres tonight at 10pm. There's also another episode tomorrow at 10pm. And the show will regularly air on Monday's. The reviews have been excellent: www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/better-call-saul/s01/Better Call Saul is a quirky, dark character study that manages to stand on its own without being overshadowed by the series that spawned it.

I was initially excited for this but as time went on I lost interest in the idea. How was the premiere? Worth checking out?

I liked it. I'll check out the episode tonight, supposed to be a little more action packed. Love a good con man story though, thought the pilot was really well written.

I really liked the first episode, set a nice tone for the show to follow. Definitely will be watching it again tonight.

Definitely will be watching it again tonight. They created the perfect cliffhanger for tonight's episode.

Seems like a bit of a Gilligan trademark, the cliffhanger endings.

Seems like a bit of a Gilligan trademark, the cliffhanger endings. He was a writer on The X-Files and learned from Chris Carter how to do cliffhangers.

Yeah, but what I like is that they never feel tacky. They don't tease us to the point where nothing happens, they set things up for the next episode while mostly wrapping up the current episode. I like Gilligan and his style, I'm curious if that new cop show he's doing for CBS will be any good. "American Crime" looks really good as well, I'm surprised ABC is actually rolling out compelling television for once, they're the shittiest of the Big Four in my opinion.

I'm surprised ABC is actually rolling out compelling television for once, they're the shittiest of the Big Four in my opinion. Nah. NBC is clearly the worst. Followed closely by Fox. ABC has built a solid comedy empire in recent years and they're the only ones making efforts to racially diversify network television. And CBS, well, they have a very specific audience and succeed with that demographic.

NBC has shows I'd actually watch though, I just feel like ABC tries too hard with gimmicky crap that's not interesting. I'm probably not their ideal demographic at 24, so that might be it. All 4 of them are crappy overall, I never understand how CBS amasses so many ratings with the same shows (crappy sitcoms, crappy cop dramas) every year.

NBC has shows I'd actually watch though. NBC's Thursday comedy block is over. And, Parks & Rec is in its final season. So what is there to watch? Grimm? Hannibal? NBC is turning into CBS-lite. The Voice. The Biggest Loser. The Apprentice. Law & Order: SVU. Chicago PD. Chicago Fire. The Blacklist? There's truth to that, but they're kicking ass on Wednesday and Thursday nights with comedies and one-hour-dramas starring women and minorities. They keep it old school and focus on franchises. It's not rocket science.

True, I haven't really watched NBC anymore since a lot of their top comedies finished up. And no one watches SNL anymore, it sucks.
I know how CBS does it, it's just more like why do people keep watching the same shit? How many CSI and NCIS shows do we need (and Hawaii Five-O too) and why do people watch crap like Two and a Half Men and Mike and Molly, it's astounding. The only time I watch CBS is football and 60 Minutes, the rest is crap.

no one watches SNL anymore. People still watch SNL. Ask PhantomKnightBecause they rely on stereotypes. Charlie Sheen and Ashton Kutcher get laid, but Jon Cryer doesn't. Hilarious! Mike & Molly are fat people doing fat people things. Hilarious! The Big Bang Theory reminds me of Steve Urkel. Hilarious! CBS is successful because they're not progressive, except when they NEED to be. They are the definition of middle-of-the-road.

Lol, that's actually a pretty good analysis of their shows. I guess it's because they steer clear of topical issues that they're so accessible. People are stupid and don't like complicated plots or themes when they watch TV. They like to sit there mindlessly and laugh as Charlie Sheen picks up women, when the laugh track tells them to of course.

Okay, first of all...really strong first episode of this show. The style reminded me of a Breaking Bad episode, obviously, but in a good way.
Now, as for the whole network shows debate...OBVIOUSLY, the good majority of network shows aren't gonna be as good as cable dramas; this is actually a debate my Dad and I can get pretty heated about from time to time; he's more of a network TV purist. HOWEVER, there ARE still some shows on the "Big Four" networks that are actually either good or even great. NBC's Hannibal is the prime example. The quality of acting, writing and directing on that show is honestly more than capable of competing with anything HBO, Showtime, etc. has to offer. Then there's something like Person of Interest on CBS, which does use the procedural format overall, but is also a good example of a show like that willing to break the mold quite often and devote stretches of episodes to interesting, serialized storylines that are both well-written and well-acted. The Blacklist applies here, too, and you know what? Scandal is pretty damn good, too, as is How To Get Away With Murder. Chicago Fire on NBC is actually good, too.
In terms of procedurals, NCIS has lost a lot of its charm and is mostly just spinning its wheels at this point. I gave up on Elementary this season. But then there's something like Castle, which is worth watching just for its fun characters and fantastic chemistry between Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic, but they still have entertaining stories, too. Are procedurals lesser television? Of course, but that doesn't mean there aren't those out thee that are actually pretty good if you're willing to give them a shot.

Are procedurals lesser television?
I think procedurals eventually turn into "lesser television." All the famous cop/lawyer/medical shows began as cutting edge television. Law & Order. NYPD Blue. ER. CSI. The list goes on. But eventually they all lose steam because episodic television wasn't meant to last 10+ years. The beauty of serialized television is that each season focuses on one main story. On episodic shows, every episode is a reboot, and eventually the writers run out of ideas.

Moviebuff makes good points there for sure, I'm not so much knocking the content but more the repeatedness of it all. Though you can say that about pretty much any show and its network.
I'm not expecting every network to be AMC or HBO, but it'd be nice.

I'm not saying procedurals should be regarded in such high esteem, just that they sometimes shouldn't be dismissed too quickly. As for your point that the format can't be sustained for 10+ years and still feel fresh, which I agree with, let's again look at Castle. The usual M.O. with a show like that is to try and draw out the classic "Will-They-Won't-They" until the end of the show. But what's keeping that show so fun to watch is the fact that they got their main characters together three years ago and are moving their development along at a good rate; Castle and Beckett are now married and if anything, it's helped strengthen the show. By comparison, NCIS is doing its damnedest not to change their characters too much and keep them in stasis for as long as possible. That simply doesn't work for a show in its 12th season, and THAT'S why people regard procedurals as television's ugly red-headed step-child now.

I think NCIS is the exception to the rule. Most long running procedurals lose their actors after a few years. Bringing in new actors and characters is how they keep things "fresh."

What'd you guys think of Episode #2? I like the pace the show is going at, you can tell it's steadily building. Moviebuff is right, the show has the Breaking Bad look (the open field sequence with the wide angle lens and the desert filters were great) but is its own animal. It operates on its own terms and I like that. I think it's going to really get going in the next episode and his transformation into Saul will evolve.

Lost half its audience from Sunday night into Monday. I doubt everyone realized it was still a new episode on Monday though.
