What'd you guys think of Episode #2? I liked it, but it felt like a Breaking Bad episode. And that's a bad thing?

Breaking Bad had some of the best, if not the best, cinematography and use of unique angles, filters and color schemes in a television show. If this show mimics it, I'm more than okay with that.

Breaking Bad had some of the best, if not the best, cinematography and use of unique angles, filters and color schemes in a television show. If this show mimics it, I'm more than okay with that. I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about the script. Saul is a lawyer and talking himself out of trouble makes sense, BUT, we saw Walter White do the same thing many times. In Episode 2, there wasn't any effort to separate the two shows. Even the ending with the other bad guy (he's the "crazy ex" on Orphan Black) going to Saul to make a business proposition came across like something that would happen to Walter White on Breaking Bad. Right now, they're using the same template. Loser becomes powerful and then goes over his head. There's just no cancer this time. I think this spin-off would be much better if Saul was already a success dirty lawyer and we saw all the shenanigans he got into before Walter White came into his life. This whole "normal guy turns evil" storyline is too reminiscent of Breaking Bad. I had high hopes after the pilot because we saw him trying to defend those three idiots and then we saw him come up with the skateboarding scheme. But in episode 2, he's just a Walter White type character. Maybe they'll rectify that in Episode 3. We'll find out on Monday.

I see what you're saying, and I don't disagree but I'll also say that it's far too early to tell what direction the show is going in. I mean, I kinda figured that it would follow a similar story arc of his transformation. It wouldn't be as fun if we were just inserted into where he's Saul and go from there. Saul always talks his way out of trouble, that's his weapon just like Walter's is his talking and ability to manipulate others. There's going to be similarities early on, but I think we'll start to see Saul acquire his oddball connections and use those a lot, which I think is going to be a big strength of the show. I'm very happy with the first two episodes and it's only going to get better.

I agree with Neverending. So far.
What they should do is tell a post-Breaking Bad story as well.

Anyone else still watching this? I usually wait until Tuesday or Wednesday to watch so my bf and I can watch together, and we just watched this week's episode last night. I don't have the words to describe how good Jonathan Banks was in this episode. Holy hell. Sooooo good!

I'm behind, and probably won't catch up until AMC re-airs the show, but I did hear/read that the most recent episode kicked ass. SnoBorderZero

Yeah, I'm gonna watch it tonight or tomorrow, "True Detective" reeled in my time this week but I've heard that this is the best yet as well. It's essentially Mike's backstory, so yeah, it's gonna be fucking awesome.

I recorded both of them last night so I'm going to get all caught up sometime this week.

I'm two episodes behind, but should be caught up real soon. I heard the show gets even better, but honestly, the first four episodes have been pretty compelling to me.

I've only missed one episode at this point, but none of them are as good as the Mike episode. The Mike episode is in a league of its own. I wish we had gotten a Mike spin-off instead of a Saul spin-off. That story with his son was worthy of its own TV show. I think Vince Gilligan and AMC fucked up. But they're making up for it. Yesterday's episode had a scene with Mike breaking into a house and funky 70's music playing. It's the highlight of the episode.

I'm at least glad to know Mike is getting juicier screentime now.

Mike was easily one of my favorite characters on Breaking Bad. I'm glad that he's out of his booth and seeing more action. I watched this week's episode last night. As much as I LOVED the episode with Mike's back story it was nice to see a bit more of a balance and shift our focus back to James. It's hard to believe we only have a few episodes left in the season.

Just watched the Mike episode. I would put that up there with (almost) any Breaking Bad episode. What an awesome character. I'm going to catch up tonight.

I just don't think that actor is very good at... well acting.
It was a great episode don't get me wrong, but his delivery of his lines leaves something to be desired if you ask me.
More slippin Jimmy please.

Finally got all caught up, only 2 episodes left including tonight's. Kinda hard to believe the season is almost over when I feel like it's just getting started. I'm excited to see how the rest of it plays out, especially since it seems like both Saul and Mike's Breaking Bad storylines are starting to form.

The Mike stuff is WAY more interesting than Saul's storyline. They picked the wrong character to spin-off. Mike's backstory with his son and the corrupt police force was worthy of an entire season.

Nah, a show just about Mike would get stale quickly because he's not really a character with a ton of layers. Already in this season we've seen that Saul isn't just some shady, anything-goes guy and has morals and is totally rootable. It's been a good season, just not an overly exciting one. It's the first season though, and we know that even though things are going well for Saul (Jimmy) that tragedy will strike and something bad will happen that will lead to him becoming Saul such as, as we can assume, Chuck will eventually die or get hospitalized again or he will lose this case and become disgruntled . It's a slow burning first season, but it contains all the brilliant elements of Breaking Bad with the superb cinematography, unique angles, excellent dialogue, etc. Let's see how these last two episodes finish before making any statements one way or the other, this is a show that likely will be more appealing binge watching than on a week by week basis. I've absolutely enjoyed the show and will watch every episode.
