I don't think I've seen Dick Tracy since it was originally in theaters. The main things that I remember about the film are the excellent art direction (which also won the Oscar) and that the marketing campaign did everything they could to make Dick Tracy seem like the next Batman. I seem to recall that a bunch of the basic plot was similar to Batman as well, but since Tim Burton's film hadn't been released by the time they began filming, that's likely just a coincidence. Since they were produced by competing studios, it's unlikely that the writers on Dick Tracy had access to the details on Batman, and even if they had, they had no way of knowing what a hit the film would later become.
It's kinda crazy that Pacino got nominated for Best Supporting Actor, but at least he didn't win. He certainly didn't deserve to win, but a lot of Oscar winners don't hold up in retrospect. The Hollywood hype machine is strong enough to get someone an Academy Award who doesn't really deserve it, but it can't convince people to keep believing it a few years later.

I do have fond memories of watching that on VHS. I had a boxset of all four films. I loved that set so much.

They sold a lot of Batman sweets back then, like chewy, gummy shit that even Google can't trace. It truly was the beginning of mass marketing a movie.

The amount of merchandise made for The Beatles movie Yellow Submarine in 1968 was staggering. As big as Batmania was, it didn't hold a candle to Beatlemania.

I was gonna say - that wasn't the first. Beatles stuff was huge, and what about Star Wars? That had a ton of stuff too before Batman
