Reports are surfacing that Avatar 2 has been delayed by a year. So... 2017 instead of 2016. That's literally 8 years after the original. Good luck, James Cameron. Not that you need it.

That's sure to piss off the 8 people who are looking forward to it.

The Terminator, released 1984. Terminator 2, released 1991.

I just don't see the hype surrounding this. Whenever Marvel so much as announces a release date for a movie the internet shuts down. When the trailer for a new Terminator movie people go crazy even though it looks like garbage. Star Wars, Batman v Superman, Bond, heck name any moderately popular property and people get excited. There's none of that with Avatar. 'Hey, we're going to have one...no, two....make that three sequels!' Society just goes eh, whatever. Maybe things will change when a trailer is dropped around 2036 but considering how it's the most successful movie ever made you would think there would be more (see: any) excitement from the movie-going public.

Instant gratification. With everything within reach within minutes, it's stay visible or die. I think it will pick up when there's something tangible to appreciate.
Plus the mob is tragically easy to please with the right formula.

I never saw the appeal of the first Avatar. Sure, it was an entertaining flick, but easily forgettable with a formula that's been done better before. How it made as much as it did is beyond me. As for the next one, I really have no interest at the moment. Maybe when it's within arm's reach, I'll think a little different about it.

It is funny that it's the highest grossing film ever, but literally no one talks about it. Like me, I'm sure a lot of people saw it once, said "alright, that was...good I guess" and moved on. Why he's so infatuated with doing 3 more of these I have no idea, is there really that much demand?

Why he's so infatuated with doing 3 more of these I have no idea, is there really that much demand? The movie made close to three billion dollars (something even the rarest of blockbusters hope to make a third of), and you're wondering why he (and the studio) want to make three more? We might be mostly snooty film buffs here on this forum, but the movie was beloved by a ridiculous amount of people that continued go see it again and again, and spread the hype train far and wide. When the sequel comes out, it will make bank, and it will no doubt be very hyped up. The amount of money being spent on these is no doubt insane as well.

No, I totally get it. My point is, who wants 3 of these? Maybe the 2nd will make a lot of money, but people won't be disinterested by the 3rd film? Just seems like a waste, this universe Cameron created isn't interesting enough to warrant 3 more films. Maybe the second one will reconfirm everything and be a huge leap, Cameron's never let me down before and I was very hyped for the first film. But do you hear people discussing these films? For a movie so widely viewed doesn't seem like anyone gives a shit.

Who wants them? All the people that continually went to it again and again and again, are probably not against the idea of three more. Naturally the other two all depend on how well the second does. If anything, they're probably saving a lot of money shooting them all now as well. I'm willing to bet all three of them will make bank, though, even if not as much as the first or second, they will make bank, just as the Star Wars prequels did. Again, three billion dollars is your answer to why they're making three more. Why did they make the last two Hunger Games movies? Why did they make three Hobbit films? Is it really a question that needs to be asked? They're not scouring the internet judging the talked about status of the first film. They're judging the fact that it made THREE BILLION DOLLARS, and sold a shit ton of DVDs/Blu-rays. But do you hear people discussing these films? For a movie so widely viewed doesn't seem like anyone gives a shit. I'm not sure what there is to discuss, but I know Avatar pops up now and again when I discuss movies with people in real life. That Cameron is making three more. That the first one made so much money. That it annoyingly changed cinema with the 3D craze. How different IMAX is compared to regular cinema. That he was talking about shooting the next ones at 60fps, etc etc. You're not going to see a massive discussion on boards like ours, because there's nothing to discuss yet, other than minor reports like this one. However, I'm willing to bet there's millions worldwide that do give a shit. While most of us here will not be waiting in great anticipation, there will be plenty of excitement built around the release of the next one, once there's actually something to see and talk about.

Sno and I are comparing it to other movies with seemingly endless amounts of hype. Like I said, anytime there's a whisper of a rumor for anything Marvel or DC related people go bananas. New Bourne movie with Matt Damon? Huge news. Every announcement with Avatar the past few years though has been met by a general feeling of 'eh ok.' Knerys is right though, let's see where we are when it gets closer to release. Things may turn around by then.

Two different discussions. The question was/is (that I was discussing), who wants them and why are they doing them. That "no one cares", is subjective. When the majority of the members on a board like ours didn't think much of the first one, yeah, it's going to get a meh reaction when news surfaces. Never mind that this isn't much news. It was just a minor report.
A new Bourne movie? For me, personally, that gets a very meh reaction. I couldn't care less.

I already know why they're making these, I understand fiscal reasons for all parties involved as I've already stated. Yes it made a lot of money, pretty much solely based on the new technology it "introduced". People wanted to see a big 3D film, wanted to see Cameron's first feature since 1997, wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I'm sure he has some new tricks up his sleeve, and I'm sure they'll do very well financially at the box office. But "Avatar 4" is going to merit the same intrigue and response? I highly doubt that. Especially if he's shooting them in succession or close to that then how will the technology for the 4th film be drastically different from the 2nd? Audiences aren't returning to this franchise for the story, which was the most heavily criticized element. I talk movies with all kinds of people from film students to casual moviegoers who go to the theaters maybe 5 times a year and if "Avatar" does ever come up it's met with a "yeah, I saw it once, it was good I guess" ho-hum response. I'd rather see him do a sequel, maybe two, and then do something else. The technology and Cameron reemerging for the first time since "Titanic" were major factors for the original's success and initial hype, he's going to have to do a lot more than that for these sequels. I never said they'd flop or anything and I can't make accurate conclusions about a movie 2 years away, but I don't think people care about these movies as much as you think. I'm very glad to see an original idea triumphing amidst a bunch of franchises, just seems like 3 more films is a bit excessive.

I bet if Doomsday and SnoBorder were alive in 1978 they would be asking, "who wants a Star Wars sequel? There's 0 people talking about it. Where's the hype? Did you SEE the holiday special? Total rubbish! These movies will be terrible. Everyone I know is more excited for Star TREK."

In reality, if I were back in the early 80s I would have rolled my eyes at a second Death Star. Like you can't come up with something than just redoing what you did before? And still blowing it up at the end?

Return of the Jedi has been widely criticized since its released. Kids were the only ones who gave it a free pass. Hence the Ewok movies.

That's a fair point, if I had seen the holiday special in 1978 I would've feared "Empire Strikes Back" resembling "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull".

I still like Reutrn of the Jedi, beyond Ewoks, beyond recycled Death Stars. And why wouldn't they recycle it? Salvage what you can and rebuild. We do it in real life!
It's got a great opening sequence, a pretty clever set up and fantastic 3 way finale. Maybe the middle gets a little muddle but in the span of the Trilogy, it's a strong finish.
And the Ewoks are not as obnoxious as everyone likes to insist they are.

Yeah I don't have a problem with "Return of the Jedi", it's awesome even if it is the lesser of the three.

I'm disappointed more than anything. As I've said before Cameron is one of the best if not THE best mainstream action director we've had in the past 30 years and he's been spinning his wheels for over a decade on these Avatar movies. And again, people care about Avengers. They care about Star Wars and Harry Potter. People don't care about Avatar. Yes it made a boatload of cash but at the same time people aren't chomping at the bit to see Avatar 4.

I like how he keeps announcing sequels without even making one yet.
