That'd be like Bryan Cranston running a factory in Japan. Not sure if serious. Nothing wrong with that role or character from that perspective. If he was named Takeshi Saito or something similar, there's where it would become an issue.

They have conveniently avoided using the name Motoko Kusanagi when referring to her. Like they realized how silly it is for a white woman to have a Japanese name. Working for a Japanese security firm. In Japan.
Look, she IS a cyborg. They had an out, albeit a soft one, in the her body could be of foreign manufacture. Not exactly canon but what else is new. Hell, there have been theories circling for years the she may have actually started as male because Motoko is a traditionally male name (though both series have more or less debunked that). But then you've got Kuze played by Michael Pitt. And Batou played by a Dane.

The reason this pisses me off, if the movie makes money that gives Hollywood a greenlight to say "See, people want to see movie with American White actors, it's not our fault..."
The new Star Wars had a girl hero and an African American lead... I'm really hoping things like this happen more so we can have more of a diverse Hollywood.

I can't stand anime but I would be interested in watching this if only to prep for the upcoming film. So was Ghost in the Shell a movie? Or did it start as a tv show? I see that Hulu has both and I think the movie preceded the series.

I don't know, GITS is about as anime-ish as anime gets, I'm not sure I'd recommend it as a gateway to non-anime fans.

Well I was only aware of it because of Toonami and because of shows like Inuyasha and Yu Yu Hakusho, and Full Metal Alchemist. It was one of those series that was on tale end too my anime saturday night.

I seem to recall you criticizing Spirited Away for being nonsensical in terms of plot and I'd say that's very true of Ghost in the Shell. It looks really cool and was a definite influence on The Matrix, but I'm not sure if you'd actually enjoy the film.

This looks.....almost perfect. The story is a bit of the departure from the 95 film but oh my god please be good.

The movie is definitely worth your time. I don't know, GITS is about as anime-ish as anime gets, I'm not sure I'd recommend it as a gateway to non-anime fans. I disagree. GitS is more realistically animated than most and doesn't a lot of the tropes, like the hyper emotional faces or fan service, you see in other animes. The story is very universal and the visual style is undeniably striking. You could even say it runs a little like an art film at times, mixed in with the action. I think it's an excellent example of the versatility anime has and it shows people it's not just girls in school uniforms and guys screaming names at the top of their lungs. The only fault I'd give it is the English Dub is a little flat (especially Motoko) but they were still learning how to make dubs work and weren't working on the best equipment at the time.

Yeah I'm sorry but, as a person who doesn't watch anime and has not seen any anime really other than Akira, this looks awesome. Like a blend of Blade Runner and The Matrix. If this is rated R (which judging from the trailer looks like it will be) then count me in. The visuals look fantastic, as does the world building, and the action looks like a ton of fun. Hey, maybe the trailer is just really well cut and I'm wrong, but I think all the complaining about appropriation or whatever will be moot if this film delivers. Count me as intrigued.

I watched the original a long time ago, probably right after it came out. I need to watch it again to refresh my memory.

I watched the 1995 movie last night, and I really enjoyed it. As someone who doesn't watch anime at all, I found the visuals to be highly impressive and the world it was set it in was a nice change from typical futuristic or dystopian fare. If they can translate the style and the ideas to this film, then it should be at the least an entertaining movie.
