I can almost guarantee they going to change her name. They've barely mentioned it in any of press bits.
This is what kills me a little....this series is iconically Japanese. Kusanagi is iconically Japanese. Like Bond is British. And they're going to change all of it.

With the influx of Asian media and influence in the entertainment industry lately you would think they would try to cultivate that. Maybe it's because it's a female lead and they only want to use proven Boxoffices earners. I don't know. ScarJo isn't terrible. Not perfect. But not terrible. |

I don't really have anything negative to say about ScarJo. She's just...not the right choice for Ghost in the Shell. I grew up on the anime and changing her race seems to be yet another slight against Asian characters and actors/actresses. Mako is a very cool character: both female and Asian. Hollywood doesn't have the balls to make a stand against this subtle racism.

My fear with casting Johansson is that they'll over do her sexuality. While the character is artistically sexualized, her personality is not in the least bit. She rips open a tank hatch with her bare hands for crying out loud. I'm not sure I can picture Johansson doing that.
Motoko is more playful in the manga and series than the movie but she's still a soldier. Her MO neutralize, not seduce.
