I dont see the problem and really since Ghost and The Shell is redubbed on english and allot of americans watch adult swim anime. I dont have a problem with race in any context be it asians played by americans and white as long as its a good perfromance and the movie is good. Dragonball Was just a bad example of american actors doing anime. This looks good and SCarlett can act if she is made too. Not all her moments are her BlackWidow.

WTF Vader it's not American at all! You are such a dumb idiot I swear... You don't understand why it's important that a culture outside of Western world created a manga and was brought to life as an anime film that is suddenly being told by an American Hollywood story is a problem? It should have been an easy fix to this problem, it should be done by Japanese artists, and filmmakers and distributed by Hollywood studios! Read this @redvader and shut up with your stupidity... www.vox.com/2016/4/15/11438080/ghost-in-the-shell-white-washing-johansson

I wish to thank Fanible for keeping the boards family friendly and doing things thats best for all weither they realize it or not that being my self. Anyways your missing my point why does it matter what the person looks like if the performance is good and kick ass. Sound like I am not the racist. It sounds like people are being prejudice againt ScarJo because she is white. I know what Anime is but nowhere does it say in the tv show credits if you make a movie of me you must be asian. I think Scarlett looks good in the wig and I have seen the cartoon I think she can pull it off. Also Scarlett took the job she didnt cast herself. I just think its does not matter as long as the actress or actor is good in a role.
When the westerns were made not all the indians were indians. Now yes John Ford used his stock Indians but most lead indians were played by white men. Its a part of Hollywood but now african americans are getting roles where characters were white. I dont think its too purposely belittle or to insult the asian culture. Its just american movie making but you also get america directors who will use all races in there movies.

She was cast because they wanted a bankable name. That's it.
Kusanagi is absolutely Japanese and to say she isn't is just plain inaccurate. The entire manga series is steeped in the post cold war politics of Japan. Know your source material before you start challenging it, Vader.
It was an opportunity to bring some disversity to the game and they didn't take it. It's disappointing and I could have got behind ScarJo if it wasn't for Paramount's incredible misguided antics in basically trying to employ digital yellow face.
They don't get what the problem is and I don't trust their decisions. They will ruin this.

I get how whitewashing is something to be on the lookout for and that CGI thing that they didn't go through with sounds gross, but isn't changing the nationalities of characters when you do Hollywood remakes just kind of par for the course? Like, was The Departed a case of whitewashing because it was a remake of a Hong Kong movie? Was Gore Verbinski's The Ring a case of whitewashing? The Magnificent Seven? Why is a remake of an animated film being held to a higher standard?

Because it's 2016 and the entire world isn't inhabited by white people?
But I'm purist in regards to this property so I'm not the best option for an unbiased answer.

But if someone remakes Let The Right One In or Abre los Ojos or Secret in Their Eyes no one expects the movies to still be about Swedes, Spaniards, and Argentines respectively. How is remaking Oldboy, The Lake House, and Godzilla with American casts such a different prospect? It would seem like this standard would only cut off Asian cinema even further from the mainstream and rob Asian writers and studios the chance at the kind of remake rights that their European colleagues have. Now, don't get me wrong, it's certainly worth questioning why any of these films needed to be remade in the first place but it would seem to be doubly pointless if you don't even try to adjust the material to fit a different cultural context.

DraculaA movie like The Departed isn't whitewashing because they only remade the story. The characters are all original. Ghost in the Shell is taking an Asian character and turning it white.

How is this different? The characters in The Departed are all stand-ins for comparable characters in the Hong Kong movie.

It wasn't anywhere near the ensemble of their American counterpart. A better argument would be The Magnificent Seven but, as Knerys pointed out, that was a different era.

I just dont have a problem if the lead character is white or asian as long as they get her right. It looks pretty close with ScarJo in the black wig. She just isnt asian and for me thats not doom or gloom. In Dragonball ethnics wasnt the only problem in that attempt at anime. It was the horrible casting in the movie, Plot and so on. Lets just say everything.

Now I may be likely wrong about this subject cause Hollywood does do odd and even bad things. Maybe I just except when hollywood does anime that chances are white actors will be playing the lead rolls. Hollywood may think its harder too find a asian too draw in money and pretty much todays problem with movies is that its gotta be a big name because likely the script likely isnt very good. I will admit i could not suggest an asian actress too play the part but the more i think on it the more I think the women who plays Agent May would look good with short hair and could have maybe been in Ghost In The Shell.

Rinko Kikuchi Maggie Q Ellen Wong Jaime Chung (with some coaching) Rila Fukashima
And that's just off the top of my head.
They didn't even try and that is disappointing. You wanna be fine with it, whatever, that's your choice. Many people are not and that's something that should paid attention to but it's not.
But truthfully this little nugget about this CGI bs has made ScarJo an afterthought. As I said, we could have gotten over it if the movie was decent. But instead of just owning the casting choice they tried to remedy in the most horrific way possible. And it doesn't matter it the effect looked good or bad. Even if they implemented it, everyone would still be asking why not just cast an Asian actor. This isn't an alien like in Star Wars or Star Trek that doesn't exist in our reality. This a race of human that lives on this planet. We don't need to "create" them to make exist in our movies.

Isn't that idea though? To bring a new cultural idea to the audience? Anime is still a very niche market. And Ghost in the Shell is NOT Studio Ghibli. Much of the reason why I love GitS is its unique perspective. As a fan, it would awesome to share that perspective with others. Not watch it get whittled down for the mass market because Superhero movies are waning and Hollywood is grasping for the next big thing.

Yeah and I'm sure that the people making the movie would say that the way to do bring those ideas to a wide audience is to set it in the culture people recognize and cast it with major stars who would draw the largest audience. Again, whether or not any foreign movie needs to be remade at all is questionable, but if you're going to do it it would seem that setting it in America would simply go with the territory.

I don't think they are changing the setting. Several press releases have stated it's taking place in Japan.

Would people had complained if they had casted and american actress who had asian roots. Actress Chloe Bennett of Agents Of Shields Is well Part Asian. Yes she still looks american but wouldnt the character be more excepted if it seemed like the studio tried too find a bridge where she was american and had asian roots. I mean have Chloe darken he hair and show more sexy looks and I think She works better. Yeah I know its not a possibility now cause the movie is casted. Just saying you can have an american actress or white but also could have one with asian roots.
