Another win for digital distribution. This could be the death of cinemas. I highly doubt that.. No other movie has or will have this kind of publicity to draw up that much money. It's a fluke, honestly.

Another win for digital distribution. $15 million online vs $2.8 million at the box office. And they just added iTunes to their list of distributors. Add Amazon, Vudu and the rest, and there's big money to be made. This could be the death of cinemas. The Interview only cost $40 million to make. It will be tough to call it a profitable movie because of all the damage it has done, but future movies with a low-budget could benefit from VOD. Yeah, but consider that Neighbors made almost $50 million its opening weekend by just doing a theater release and didn't have the free publicity too, and that seems more like a loss.

Well also keep in mind the situation. This was a thrown together, last minute release after being canceled. With proper promotion and lack of potential terrorist attack, it would do much better.

iverdawg Dracula @dukeleto There's obviously more money to be made at the theaters because of ticket prices. Two tickets for The Interview at most major theaters costs $24. That adds up quickly. But with $6 you can watch The Interview with a living room filled with people. Audiences just got a taste for this and it's only a matter of time till digital distribution becomes the norm.

Digital distribution has been my norm for over 10 years now LEGAL distribution. 2014 had the lowest movie theater attendance and profits in the entire 21st century. You can blame the movies themselves, but as Knerys has pointed out, 2014 wasn't THAT bad. There was plenty of respectable movies released, but people refused to go see them. Even Christopher Nolan's Interstellar couldn't get people into theaters. 2012 and 2013 were BIG years with numerous blockbusters, but it also seems like audiences looked at their bank accounts and finally thought to themselves, "eh. I'll wait for Redbox." The Interview just gave people a taste of what it's like to spend $6 on a movie without leaving the house. It's only a matter of time before other studios begin to exploit that, especially since it's a cheaper alternative to physical distribution.

I would be willing to shell out $20 for a vod release of a blockbuster type film. I do not get to go to the theaters much. It is just too expensive even when it is just me and the wife. I have 4 kids so when one of their films comes out I pretty much have to take out another mortgage on the house for all of us to go. They knock it down to $20 for vod for the big name films and $10 for the smaller stuff and I would put more money in the studio's pockets.

No surprise. It was inevitable after all those crazy emails got leaked. She was pretty much giving Sony a bad name.

Good luck with that. I see Sony slowly falling into obscurity and financial losses before it becomes like New Line Cinema.
