Dracula , don't roll your eyes. Knerys , calm down. From a BUSINESS standpoint, 2014 has been the worst year for movies in the 21st century. This is not an opinion. It's a fact. Look at the numbers. Attendance hit an all-time low and box office grosses hit an all-time low. And just when things couldn't get worse, this Sony hack occurs and it leads to the theme of this discussion: I was just reading an article where the question was asked: how badly does Sony regret making The Interview? We all know the answer. If Sony executives could build a time machine, they would stop this movie from ever happening. And here's the part that makes me laugh the most. The Interview hasn't even been released yet. Will critics like it? Will audiences like it? Will it make money? Who knows... and who cares? As far as Sony is concerned, the movie is a mistake. Don't believe me? The Los Angeles premiere is tonight - Doomsday , where you at? - and Sony has beefed up security and have banned Seth Rogen and James Franco from speaking to the press. Is this how you treat your big Christmas Day release? Nah. It's how you treat a walking time bomb. And that's why, from my point-of-view, The Interview will go down as the movie that represents 2014 Hollywood - a colossal failure! So in 3 weeks when Ian is asking us to name the "important movies" of 2014, The Interview HAS to make the list. There's no debate.

I don't even believe this story that North Korea was really behind the hack. Sony has long been a target for hackers (who have been retaliating because Sony tried to get some hacker targeted) and have had their PSN network taken down a handful of times in the last couple of years. I think this is related to that and Sony made up this North Korea story, partly to give the movie free publicity and partly because it's less embarrassing to be brought to your knees by a dictator than to be brought to your knees by a bunch of geeks living in their parents basements.

That is a valid point but it also raises the question: what does Columbia Pictures have to do with Playstation? How does attacking Columbia affect or change Playstation? Is it a... warning? The FBI has been investigating the case for over a week and speculation has been raised that this could be an inside job. Earlier this year, after the "flop" of Spider-Man, Columbia fired a shitload of people and this could be a vendetta. Regardless... The Interview is caught in the middle. Its legacy will always be tied to this scandal. And this is only Seth Rogen's second movie as a director. I can't wait to see what he and Evan Goldberg cook up next.

It's being financed by Megan Ellison, the woman Scott Rudin called a "bipolar 28 year old lunatic" in one of those leaked e-mails.

And I love that Megan Ellison made fun of the e-mail on Twitter. "I thought I was eccentric."

Yeah, I really want "The Interview" to be good because I have a great disdain for North Korea but the trailers don't look like it's going to live up to the funny concept. It has been a rough year, but there's been some very, very bright spots as well. Overall not a great year, but the movies I have enjoyed I've found to be some of the strongest of the decade yet (Boyhood, Birdman, Gone Girl, Nightcrawler, etc.).

I wasn't going to see it anyway, so I don't care. Hopefully nothing happens.

How will they know!? o_0
I hope they're not planning on blowing up theaters, because I have no choice in that regard.

Wait...so the group calls themselves the "Guardians of Peace" but will blow up theaters over a nonsensical movie?

Wait...so the group calls themselves the "Guardians of Peace" but will blow up theaters over a nonsensical movie? Great point. Yeah, this movie is going to be so irrelevant that these "efforts" by this moron group are laughable. "The Interview" was likely going to flop before all of this attention, and likely won't suffer or gain much from it either. They're giving this ho-hum movie way more press than it deserves.

Wait...so the group calls themselves the "Guardians of Peace" but will blow up theaters over a nonsensical movie? Their line is that they think the movie is so inflamatory that it could lead North and South Korea to go to war, so they're trying to prevent said war by hacking people and making stupid idle threats.

North Korea threatens to go to war if South Korea sneezes in their general direction. And even if they had the audacity to actually commit, they'd be shut down by China before they could launch anything of consequence.

North Korea has been firing "test" missiles over Japan and South Korea for decades now. They didn't go to war over that, they won't because of a movie.

Carmike Theaters won't be screening The Interview next week because of the threats made by the hackers.

That's right. You're in Georgia now. That's the main theater there.

Well...
That's it.
Regal and AMC will NOT screen The Interview.
The movie is dead before it was even released.
That was 2014, everybody.
See ya in 2015.

Ouch, what an overreaction to an insignificant movie. This is worse than Viacom chickening out on South Park about the Muhammad shit.
