What is the general sentiment about this movie here? It's uneven. The set-pieces are really strong but the conflict feels rushed and it's kind of a weak intro for Black Panther. Ultimately too good of a spectacle to dislike but could have been much more. As I understand it, the Civil War storyline was a long-term bit of writing than scaled multiple issues of multiple different books. Trying to do it in one movie as an answer to Batman v Superman was probably a bit shortsighted.

I'm willing to bet this was in development first. Also, at one point for a while, both movies were actually set to release on the same day before BvS moved up to March.

It's very melodramatic. In the future remake when they have the X-Men and Spiderman from the jump civil wars gonna be so damn good.

As I understand it, the Civil War storyline was a long-term bit of writing than scaled multiple issues of multiple different books. Civil War isn’t a complicated story to adapt. The filmmakers just need balls to pull it off. It’s written by Mark Millar, the guy behind Wanted, Kick-Ass and Kingsman. This is the type of story you give to Matthew Vaughn, not the Russo Brothers. In Civil War, Tony Stark embodies the Bush Era and the Patriot Act. He’s the clear “villain” of the story. Captain America ultimately loses and it leads to Spider-Man: One More Day, the most controversial Spider-Man story next to the Clone Saga. The real problem with Civil War is they did the story too early. You don’t tell that story in the midst of the Infinity Stone saga. They should have saved it for now, with the introduction of the X-Men and the Fantastic Four in the MCU and with Spider-Man past his high school days.

Is that the one where he makes a deal with the devil to retcon his marriage in order to save Aunt May?

Is that the one where he makes a deal with the devil to retcon his marriage in order to save Aunt May? In Civil War, Peter Parker joins Team Stark and reveals that he is Spider-Man. Aunt May gets brutally attacked and he makes a deal with Mephisto to save her life. That results in people forgetting he’s Spider-Man and his marriage to MJ being erased. It’s basically No Way Home but more maddening to longtime readers cause it deleted 20 years worth of Spider-Man lore.

I just remembered Punisher saving him from getting his butt kicked.

Doctor Strange 2016
The next origin story from the MCU. What did I think?
- I know its been said, but Steven Strange is quite similar to Tony Stark. (In fact, he's pretty much been filling the Stark role since Endgame). The main difference is that Strange actually lost the ability to do what he was great at and had to cope with that.
- I'm not overly excited about the mystical powers. They do seem to have some rules associated with them, but they are a little too close to the nebulous, undefined powers I hate so much in movies like these.
- The last act really clicks. The movie does seem to lull for a while, but gets better as it moves towards the ending.
- I really appreciated Mordo as a character this time around and I hope they do more with him.
- Cumberbatch was great casting.
7/10
Ranking: 1. Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Winter Soldier 3. Avengers 4. Iron Man 5. Iron Man 3 6. Ant-Man 7. Civil War 8. Doctor Strange
9. Thor 10. Captain America 11. Iron Man 2 12. Age of Ultron 13. Incredible Hulk 14. Thor: The Dark World

Only ever reading the miniseries and Wikipedia, i kinda liked the clone saga. Id like to see it onscreen at some point.

I agree. Civil War has issues. Namely the last 10 seconds.

Personally my gripe with Civil War has always been that the title cards aren't large enough.
