I dunno, I still prefer this to The Incredible Hulk. THAT movie is more boring to me. Yeah, understandable. They're pretty close.

Captain America: Winter Soldier 2014
I always remembered this being one of the really good ones, but I forgot just how damn good it actually is. The pacing is exciting, the action is thrilling, the character arcs work, its a solid package of an action movie.
- The Winter Solider is a very intimidating presence the first few times he shows up.
- The good guys kill an unexpected amount of people. Mostly henchmen, but still. I'm becoming more and more bothered by this in movies as I get older.
- Having Black Widow in the film as someone Cap can play off of was a great decision, and ScarJo is awesome.
- There are a couple incidents of "convenient technology" that kind of bother me, like Fury's street hole maker (?) and the hologram mask technology. At Least Mission Impossible established its mask tech early in the film to call back to.
- The Heat-like traffic fight scene is awesome.
- Peggy Carter makes a comment of her husband being a survivor of Captain America's final assault on Hydra in WWII, which put a knowing smile on my face.
- How did they build all that junk under the Potomac??
- Bucky worked a lot better as a character for me this time around, and that credits scene in the memorial hall was a great capper.
This is the best of the bunch out of the films we've rewatched so far.

I'd need to give this one another watch to be sure, but while I like Winter Soldier...I don't think I love it like the majority of people do. Great action and re-introduction of Bucky and everything, but certain predictable plot elements like Nick Fury's "fate" kind of took away from some of the suspense for me the first time through.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2014
What a gamble this movie was, going with a space opera with Marvel characters no one has heard of after delving into some of the comic's biggest names. Well, it worked, and as a result Marvel realized the floodgates were opened.
- I know this is talked about all the time, but the soundtrack is awesome. I just watched The Adam Project the same day as this, and that movie was trying sooo hard to be this movie with its soundtrack and failing. But the music choices here are top notch and also have a strong emotional connection to the story, which is great.
- I love how much of a complete arc this story has with each character individually and collectively. The ways they come together are sometimes subtle, sometimes obvious, but always moving forward.
- There are some really cool designs, like the concept of Knowhere and the astral designs of the Nova ships.
_ Groot was so cool. He was physically the strongest but also a big softie. I like that James Gunn even included a Frankenstein reference for him.
- The humour works almost always. Rocket especially.
This one has shot to the top of the list in this rewatch, just like Winter Soldier before it.

Avengers: Age of Ultron 2015
I was curious how I would find this one coming back to it, and... it was sorta disappointing. Ultimately, it has some really great stuff in it, but the story is quite a mess.
- The farmhouse segment is really great. Nice seeing the team take a breather and seeing Hawkeye's private life.
- On a similar note, the party in Avengers tower is also cool, especially the trying to lift the hammer part.
- I did find that the film was not quite as funny as the first one.
- I can't believe they pulled off the Vision.
- I really liked Ultron as a villain. James Spader was an interesting choice for the voice and is really worked out.
- The world-hopping started to get pretty crazy and made the plot feel like a connect-the-dot puzzle.
- The post-credits scene doesnt make a lot of sense. It seemed like Thanos sent Ultron? But he didn't. I guess they just really wanted us to see the gauntlet.
- I'm surprised they killed off Strucker. Seems like he'd be rife for bringing back as a small-capacity villain, especially in something like Falcon and Winter Soldier.
It is a bit of a letdown and doesnt feel as complete or dynamic as the first avengers, but still has lots of gem moments.

This is a very exciting stretch in MCU history, when Winter Soldier, Guardians and Ultron release. Felt like they were just scratching the surface at this point, and the addition of Guardians was well accepted.

Ant-Man 2015
Antman was a movie which I was pleasantly surprised by when it came out. In this rewatch I consider it middle of the road MCU, but one of the better middle of the roads.
- The highlights of this movie are how much fun the shrinking scenes are. The details are great and there's a lot of amusement in the fight scenes in the suitcase and in the train set.
- I forgot how bad Evangeline Lilly's haircut in this is.
- Michael Pena's great, and his story scenes are clearly an Edgar Wright inspiration. I can't help but think how much sharper they would be edited if he were still at the helm.
- I like the idea that Antman and wasp were secret heroes in the 80s.
- Cross is a stereotypical bad villain from old action movies, where the filmmakers think that what makes a villain good is how ruthless they are.
- The Falcon scene feels very shoehorned, but I suppose establishing a connection was necessary.
So as far as MCU origin stories go, this one works quite well.

Yeah, Guardians is a lot of fun. Though, I think I'm in the minority, in that I prefer Vol. 2.
It's been a while since I last watched Age of Ultron, but I remember liking it.
And I also appreciate the smaller-scale, more personal stakes and heist movie feel of Ant-Man. Michael Pena is indeed great, and I've always thought it'd be fun if Marvel ever utilized his quick recap style for special refresher videos that they could throw online before different new releases.

Always sad when I remember pena is a scientologist but damn it if he isn't so charming.

Captain America: Civil War 2016
The MCU's answer to Batman v Superman
- This definitely feels like the movie where Marvel reached its "We do what we do well, so you will be entertained no matter what" status. Because it does hit character beats well and their interactions are a lot of fun.
- That being said, Civil War doesn't really hit well with me. I think the reason is I have a tough time buying the fervor with which these characters are fighting one another. It feels too intense and I dont really buy that there would be that much of a divide between them. This is especially felt in the last fight between Tony and Cap.
- Its cliche to say, but the airport scene is the best part and really feels like comic pages come to life, on the same level as the tracking shot from Avengers.
- Ant-man turning huge was awesome. Actually, Ant-man was awesome. It was fun seeing Paul Rudd's humour interact with the other heroes.
- The Spider-man introduction seemed forced, but he was great in the airport scene as well.
- The opening action scene vs crossbones seems pretty generic.
- I really liked Zemo as a villain. He was certainly understated and not in it that much, but his manipulations were an interesting take on the bad guy in these films. Some of his early scenes, like the water in the sink, seemed tonally off though.
- Not sure the Rhodey getting injured part was necessary. It seemed there to add stakes, but it wasn't really needed. If he died, then the stakes are too high and it feels like there's no coming back for these characters. But also because he doesn't (and there's really no fallout from it later) it seems like it didn't need to be there.
Civil War is pretty much the definition of a middle of the road MCU film.

I actually think it's pretty clearly one of the stronger MCU movies. It does a great job of selling the viewpoints of both sides while mining it all for maximum dramatic potential, which leads to a number of great scenes that are just conversations between characters, all of the action scenes are pretty kick-ass, and the movie overall just has a very gripping tone and atmosphere. I actually prefer this to Winter Soldier.

What is the general sentiment about this movie here? I think it works in spite of itself. I don't find it particularly insightful in its politics, it mostly botches any sort of ideological conflict, and it's one of the most visually drab of any MCU entry. But the movie pulls together its various characters and storylines reasonably well thanks to some solid pacing and effective screenwriting. The action also works pretty well.

What is the general sentiment about this movie here? It's uneven. The set-pieces are really strong but the conflict feels rushed and it's kind of a weak intro for Black Panther. Ultimately too good of a spectacle to dislike but could have been much more.
