Top Gun is a boring movie. I love Top Gun. One of my favourite 80s movies.

It's basically An Officer and a Gentleman, but intentionally dumber, and filmed like a recruitment commercial for the air force. I get why it would have stood out as a popcorn movie in the 80s, no idea why anyone still cares today.

I don't think I've ever actually seen top gun. And I'm ok with that.

Call me crazy, but Jersey Girl is a pretty decent romcom which if nothing else features one of George Carlin's best performances in movies.

That movie took such a beat down because it came out in the midst of a Ben Affleck/Jennifer Lopez backlash and Gigli, and most Kevin Smith fans were reluctant to a PG-13 movie without Jay and Silent Bob. But even if you don't like the movie, it isn't half as bad as it's made out to be.

The entire time I was watching Jersey Girl, I kept wondering what was supposed to be so terrible about this movie? It was a fairly standard romcom, with just enough Kevin Smith style humor to stand it apart. I've been dragged to see far worse chick flicks that made far more money. I agree with #1Godzillafan. If this movie had been released before Gili, it would have been well received.

Also the film was in kind of a weird place where it wasn't going to appeal to Kevin Smith's core fans but also wasn't really calibrated to give fans of routine rom-coms what they wanted.

It's certainly not a typical romcom, but fans of routine romcoms could have been convinced to see it with the right marketing. Heck, I convinced my girlfriend to go see, "the new Ryan Reynolds romcom about a couple dealing with a terminal cancer diagnosis." Worked like a charm.

It's really a harmlessly cute movie. I get not caring for it, but the thrashing it got was borderline uncalled for.
If nothing else, the way Will Smith was worked into the plot was pretty great, and I love the climax where they're performing a musical piece from Broadway plays, and every family is performing Cats except Ben Affleck's, which is from Sweeny Todd of all fucking things. That cracked me up.

Not sure if this counts as a hot take, exactly, but On Her Majesty's Secret Service has the best score of all the Bonds.

I haven't seen it in awhile, but it's an under appreciated Bond for sure. If Connery had starred in it people would view it as a classic Bond, especially with that big ending. But no one likes George Lazenby.

So, when it comes to these boards, this is apparently a hot take: I finally watched Da 5 Bloods yesterday and really liked it. Really liked it a lot.

I didn't like it, nor did a lot of people who saw it. But critics loved it. Wouldn't be surprised if it won Best Picture. Spike's made far more deserving movies in his career, but it's 2020 and there's no clear consensus and Hollywood can pat themselves on the back for finally giving the man his due. It doesn't make up for choosing Driving Miss Daisy over Do the Right Thing, but it would be something I guess.

There’s Nomadland and that Tom Hanks/Paul Greengrass western for the Oscars to jerk off to. And Sonic.

But looking through everyone else's reviews in the thread, while I understand the criticisms, what bothered you guys about it didn't bother me. At least to the degrees it did you guys. I will concede that Spike didn't need to shoehorn in so much political grandstanding, but while I thought it was unnecessary, it never took away from the core story -- these vets going back for their lost friend and gold -- which was more than strong enough to carry me through the movie. I also liked certain touches like the shifting aspect ratios, and of course, Delroy Lindo's force-of-nature performance. I don't know if he's the frontrunner for Best Actor, but I know he's in the conversation, and for good reason.

It felt unfocused and rambling when if he stuck with the core of what the story could've and should've been he would've had a knockout. The idea of Vietnam vets going back to find treasure and turning on each other, a sort of revision The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, is brilliant stuff. But the movie meanders and explores bad subplots (the French mine disarmers, Jean Reno's character, etc.) instead of keeping its eyes on the prize. There was were sections of clumsy improv and repetition that I think could've been trimmed down significantly. Spike is a brilliant, meticulous filmmaker that studies the hell out of his subjects. The problem is that sometimes I feel like he wants to cram so much into his work that the central plot gets lost in the shuffle.

But for me personally, the revisionist Treasure of the Sierra Madre film at the heart of it all had me truly invested enough for me to give it a thumbs up.
