Insane amount of hits. On another level for an arena rock type band. Their live sets were just hit after hit ala hall and oates.
I actually saw em in 2012, roth sounded pretty awful but Eddie was still shredding. Think there's a decent video of the show on youtube still too.

Always had mixed feelings about Van Halen. Eddie was great axe man and they were obviously a solid band instrumentally but their lyrics and songwriting always just seemed kind of basic and lunkheaded You're not wrong, but my defense is that there's room in rock for vapid music about partying and getting laid and Van Halen does it perfectly. Partially because Eddie himself can shred like no one else but also because David Lee Roth's goofiness was the kind of perfect affable dude to sing those silly lyrics.

Shouldn’t your counter-argument be, “hey, they have their serious stuff.”

I know someone is. I recall having a Roth vs Hager debate with someone. Figured it was you cause I do know we had a Black Sabbath argument that morphed into a Van Halen one.,

His scat song is an atrocity.

I dug out the Best of Both Worlds CDs I got like 12 years ago, one of their many greatest hits compilations. There's some really good songs on there, lots of crap too. I think that sums up my all-around opinion right there. RIP Eddie.

PG Cooper thebtskink DraculaShould we do Black Sabbath now? I'm a playlist junkie and one of my spooky time playlists begin with this song and end with Hotel California. LOL.

PG Cooper was furious when I compared Dio to Steve Perry from Journey.

PG Cooper was furious when I compared Dio to Steve Perry from Journey. He was right to be. Dio is probably a top 10 rock vocalist, not just metal.

My Sabbath knowledge doesn't run super deep. N.I.B., War Pigs, Paranoid, and Iron Man are probably my favorites, which are all super obvious picks. Probably prefer Ozzy solo.

Got to see Charles bradley perform months before his death. He did have a helluva stage presence. Backing band was great. He change outfits twice.

If we're talking classic Sabbath:
The most seminal song on the most seminal album in Heavy Metal history, essentially a thesis statement for the genre. The slow sense of horror and dread, the ominous lyrics, the way the song builds in intensity before exploding in an awesome collection of guitar work. "Satan sitting there is smiling". Bad. Ass. Heavy Metal rules.
Fun story about War Pigs, the last time I saw Judas Priest in concert, the band played War Pigs over the PA system while they were setting up backstage and the entire arena (or at least everyone on the floor) sang along. Pretty magical moment. Especially since the song cut early to lead into Priest.
If we're talking the Dio Years:
Not as cool as Sabbath's other "Children" song, but I might like it more tbh.
They say that life's a carousel/Spinning fast you gotta ride it well/The world is full of kings and queens/Blind your eyes and steal your dreams/It's Heaven and Hell
That classic Dio mix of delicacy and heaviness. Great riffs from Tony Iommi.
Creepy atmosphere. Also by far the coolest needle drop in the animated classic Heavy Metal.
In some ways one of their darkest songs lyrically. Also that main riff is just delcious.
And if we're talking the underrated Born Again album with Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan:

Oh and I'm gonna count the "Heaven & Hell" stuff because it's just the Dio era lineup again
