Interstellar - Review Thread So after much hype. and a level of Secrecy so tight, the movie is finally out. But the question is, is this another great Christopher Nolan film? Did it achieve what it wanted and gave us the best scifi space movie in years? Yes and No. This film is not better than Inception or The Dark Knight Trilogy. But it was a good movie. The visuals absolutely stunning and the story is pretty firmly put together. But I feel Nolan is reaching for the stars (figuratively and literally) Here are some of my highlights of the movie and I can't talk about them without spoiling it for you so be warned. - The daughter and father relationship is front and central to the entire film and works really well in the beginning but looses a lot of the emotional ground half way in. I didn't feel that deep connection from Chastain and definitely not in the final scene.
The Wormhole theory works really well, until it goes full blown 2001 Space Odyssey. The whole 5th dimension thing is interesting but it could have been a lot more done instead of just being in your daughters room.
-I love the surprise by Matt Damon, I don't think anyone saw that coming. But him becoming the bad guy. I did call that, so obvious he was going to try and kill McCaughney.
-The planet sequences I was looking forward to the most, only showed a little bit. If you have seen the previews, you already to know what to look forward to. A watery planet and an icy planet. Nothing major work here on that front, which is sad because I was really looking forward too it.
- 1 hour on the watery planet equals 7 years on Earth. Holy crap that's cool and I've seen it done before in Star Trek Voyager but glad to see it again. Theory of Relativity is awesome.
- Robot with sarcasm? Really, annoying and takes away from a lot of the serious moments in the film.
All in all, good effort by everyone but not as great of a movie as some people will make it I'm sure. More discussions to come 9/10 or 8.5 still thinking this one through, a lot to digest...

So literally the one guy who said he wasn't going to see this movie not only didn't stick to his word, but actually saw it before everybody else here.
And he gave it a 9/10.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

lol. It's a good movie. I just got sick of people saying it's going to be the greatest movie of all time... Not here, just in my circle of friends.
And I'm sure they all walked out of the with boners gagging over Nolan

Knowing how often you seem to change your mind on movies, I wouldn't be surprised if by this time next year you're hailing this movie.

It's not a bad thing if you change your mind. But neither is sticking to your guns.

It's not nearly as good as the 1989 Interstellar.

That was pretty damn good. No time table on when I'll have a review. Gotta let it sink in a bit.
Bottom line: very good first half, absolutely incredible second half, and a questionable choice or two at the very end.

Interstellar (2014)
I recently wrote a blurb on Facebook about a couple science fiction things, one of them being about the use of technology. Very often, and sometimes it's the premise of a movie, technology is this double-edged sword that can do awesome things, but will always betray us in the end. This movie's first 10 minutes is devoted to introducing us to a few characters and the father-daughter relationship, but it's also being pro-technology with its depiction of the drone, and also with a lot of little things. This movie is suspenseful, exciting, occasionally funny, ambitious, and layered wonderfully with relevant themes such as those showcased even in the opening 10 minutes.
It's really the second half of this movie that I would call brilliant, but that's not to speak lightly of the first half. Some shaky choices are made, especially involving Cooper's rushed introduction into the main plot, but the Nolans do a great job of painting a picture of this near-future Earth. And this is really the most difficult future to depict. Anyone can tell a story thousands of years in the future where mankind is enslaved by giant beets, or everyone flies spaceships and eats lasers, but to extrapolate the problems of today's society and fast-forward only about 50 years can be a daunting task; it has to be relatable, stick to only one or two problems we face today, but still be interesting and believably prophetic. The year is about 2050 and the planet is falling apart. This isn't Mad Max where everyone is killing each other for fuel, not even quite Children of Men territory where the world is starting to go to hell and humanity is breaking down. Instead, everyone is kind of in denial about where things are heading and everyone is doing their best to survive a bit longer. Society isn't panicking, they're apathetic. Sound familiar? It's clear we don't have too much time left, but it shows this without the subtle hammer of a Michael Bay film. Then we get into the great stuff.
Nolan says there is no green screen in this film, but don't let that fool you, there are special effects. They're great, but also austere and restricted. Many of the shots of outer space show the side of their spaceship as if the camera is strapped there and it's a style that works well for the film. But don't worry, this isn't a found-footage style. There are also plenty of long shots, and extremely-long, Lawrence of Arabia-esque shots that give the movie that epic feel we were all waiting for. And speaking of epic, Hans Zimmer has really outdone himself this time. There were times they must have been tempted to use "2001: A Space Odyssey" inspired music, but instead take some pretty risky chances with music that sounded more like it belonged in The Exorcist. It's amazing and it's the #1 driving force in many scenes, including in what I will call "the spinning scene."
As I said, the second half is amazing, filled with many scenes and plot lines that aren't even hinted at in the trailers. First, I'd like to talk about "Dr. Mann's" planet.
This whole storyline reminded me a lot of a major twist in the movie Sunshine. Things are going fine until they find the commander of the first Icarus and all hell breaks loose as he kills almost everyone in a crazy-filled rage. But unlike Sunshine, this didn't only not ruin the movie, it built off its main theme in a really cool way. I ate up everything he said about cowardice, but also altruism and how it cannot be achieved by a single human being. Up until this point, Cooper was fighting against humanity's selfishness as a whole but in a more indirect way, but now he's come to meet it face-to-face.
If you loved the editing of Inception (who doesn't?), then you're going to love this film. There are intercuts of shit going down millions of miles away along with stuff back at Earth and their own dealings. It's all handled very well. It's the VERY ending that I have a beef with...
Obviously, don't read this stuff if you have not seen the movie. I'm getting into everything.
I was OK with most of the ending stuff, stuff I'm sure many people won't be. But earlier in the movie when Brand is talking about love possibly being beyond our understanding and deeper than we thought (it's not), I was getting a little nervous. Sure enough, there's some liberties taken with logic and time travel in the end. The way I understand it, as Cooper goes further and further into the black hole, he is going extremely far into the future to the point where humanity is so advanced that we've evolved into fifth-dimensional beings. You know what, I like that; I'm OK with it. In fact, I love it. What I don't like is that future humanity is using Cooper to ensure that there can BE a future humanity by making sure we travel to the stars. We're lifting ourselves by our own bootstraps and that's a paradox. And seeing as this isn't an episode of Doctor Who, but instead a movie that is partially written by an actual scientist who ensured things were as realistic as possible, I don't like this fudging of plot. That's too bad, because I also complained in my Facebook blurb about how sci-fi movies often lack optimism and solutions brought on by human ingenuity. This movie actually pretends to reuse this common problem. It pretends to have a higher power help us out as if we couldn't do it ourselves. And while I love the incredibly refreshing revelation that we can do all of this by ourselves, it's incredibly frustrating that its depicted by time-travel nonsense. Fortunately for the ending of the film, it's washed away with the final, final ending, which was near-perfect and exactly the kind of optimistic ending I've been looking for in science fiction for a long time.
Despite this major flaw in an essential moment of the film, the movie still stands as an incredible achievement of filmmaking and a four-star movie. It was pretty damn close to being a masterpiece.

I, too, will wait to do a full review to go into detail but for now ... an awe-inspiring, deeply emotional sci-fi epic from one of today's true greats, equally powerful in both scope and feeling. Go. See. This. Movie. If 2001: A Space Odyssey had more of an emotional undercurrent to help drive the storyline, this is what it would be like.
