I mean it's good but I can't shake the feeling of it just hitting the same beats as the first season. Does pizzalato write anything without including little crafted figurines? Was in his book too. Leaning on that as being the creepy part is getting a bit old.
And how deep and gravelly can they make him and Roth's voices?
The way it's told is solid and I'm definitely interested but I couldn't help but keep comparing it to the first which I guess isn't such a bad thing for 2 episodes.

You're not wrong, it's definitely drawing a bit from the same well here. I guess it's a case of be careful what you wish for. Everyone complained that season two wasn't similar enough, and now we're maybe getting something too similar to season one. Too early to say for sure, but hopefully the setup is similar but its execution deviates into being its own thing.

I guess it's still compelling. The crazy old man angle could get very interesting as it ramps up, even if it is a rather tired story trope.

I mean I'm just going through the paces this time around. I'll finish it but man the writing is bad. The fights between detective and his wife are just laughable. They just don't even seem warranted. And are we supposed to like them both? Cuz they both suck.
And again so much unnecessary themes of homosexuality and hiding it, we went through this with the useless character last season.
It's really just a sum of the criticism of the second season. I literally can't recommend this at all really.

I like both leads, but I agree the dialogue in the fights with the wife is bad.

I'm just watching for Dorff, which is something I never thought I'd write. Outside of that, it's been slow, and not always the good kind. It's taken too long to get to some actual suspects.

It has its flaws, but the payoffs will hopefully be worth it. The last episode (#6) was anything but slow with a lot of things happening including that great cliffhanger ending.

I'm fine with a happy ending, and the symbolism of Wayne's journey at the end, but there wasn't any mystery or dramatic tension, even with the twist.
Well acted, written poorly.
I'm cool with a season 4 if Nicky P would give up the reigns.
Season 2 was better than this.

I get what Pizzolatto is doing with that ending, but it's underwhelming. In the end the case culminates in little intrigue or overarching conspiracies. It's a pretty simplistic explanation for everything that just doesn't feel satisfying.
It's too bad because I really enjoyed the show, and it had some wonderful moments and performances throughout, but to go through eight episodes and find that's all Nic P. had up his sleeve is unsatisfying.

No involvement from Pizzolatto this time around, and I think that's a good thing.
Was a huge fan of season one and I enjoyed season three, but I think fresh voices heading season four is going to be beneficial.
Also like that it's set in Alaska. Expect lots of grim landscape shots and howling wind.
