I thought it was awful. From the writing on down to the direction, that episode was really bad. TK is having some seriously bad acting/writing that is taking me out of almost every scene.
I may step off the train here and watch the rest when it ends, I'll probably check out the fall out episode next though, the camera with TK from the fat detective has to be found right?
And clearly Vessaritis is going to either go undercover herself, or more likely force her sister into a CI position and it will inevitably go wrong.

The original director of season one, Cary Fukunaga, did direct this latest one, which I found interesting because I didn't think he'd be involved (otherwise why not let the man direct the whole season?) considering he and Nic clashed during the first season. Perhaps they brought him in because he did such an incredible job when Rust invades the projects in season one and wanted to emulate some of that here.
I say stick through it man, it's gotta be a wild last 4 episodes from this point on (I hope) and I feel like Velcoro has been held back since the first two episodes and we're gonna see him go all out loose cannon from here on. But hey, you're not wrong, critics on RT were not a fan of the episode and shared the same thoughts as you. Obviously there needs to be an endgame that starts to form, I've held off being overly critical of the season before in hopes that it will all lead to some interesting reveals. Hopefully the shootout is the turning point for this to take form.
That's an interesting theory, they did bring her sister back last episode so they could be leading to that. All this teasing of these crazy parties, they've gotta show us the spectacle sooner rather than later.

It's like Fukunaga didn't even try. The action in the last 15 or so minutes was nice, but did we seriously end the episode on a freeze frame? What decade is this?

I don't think that was Fukunaga for this episode. Pretty sure I heard he's not doing any episodes this year. Here is the IMDB link as well--- www.imdb.com/title/tt4057168/?ref_=ttep_ep4. Says it was Jeremy Podeswa. But way too many overhead shots of the freeway this year. There are literally 3-4 shots each episode. We get it already. I liked the episode. Still very much all over the place and it's not clear as to what's going on, but I thought the shootout was great. Except for the weird freeze frame at the very end. I will agree though, Kitsch is awful in this. Farrell, on the other hand is great. He kicks ass. Based on the way the ep ended, and judging from the previews, my theory is that the next episode will jump forward in time a little. For all intents, it looks as if they got their man, so the higher ups will just accept it and try to close the case until McAdams decides to try and open up things again. The 3 main characters look a little different, and McAdams says something along the lines of "Do you really think he was the killer?", so I guess the department heads try to close the case.

Ah, good catch Donny, I think I pulled that from Rotten Tomatoes and they must have just copied Fukunaga's name onto the episode on accident.
Yeah, I could see the higher ups figuring they got their man and moving on, similar to Reggie Ledoux in season one. But it's clear that this will follow season one's more realistic approach of having them capture fall guys and the most powerful and in charge are never seen or caught. Still, even if the higher ups decide this pimp was the one who killed Caspere that doesn't exactly solve anything, and how much info on the guy can they obtain especially since they destroyed their meth lab?
Was there more to the house where Farrel was shot in? I feel like there's major clues there and they barely scoured it for anything, though maybe I missed a piece of dialogue that explained this. Unless the guy in the crow costume snatched up all the remaining evidence and there was nothing left to find? I mean, a house like that, there's gotta be more hidden doors and cameras right?

I liked the episode. Don't get the complaints. Not as good as episode 2 but better than 1.

Good news gang, we destroyed the meth lab, and we saved up enough money to save the teen center! *Jumps into air, freeze frame, end of film*

The freeze frame was clearly supposed to be an homage to the end of one of last year's episodes, when we first saw LeDoux in his undies and a gas mask. Except with 0.1% of the impact.

You are correct, the scene could have used 100% more fat sweaty guy in his underwear.

I didn't even realize. I want to like season 2. I really do, but I'm having such a hard time defending the show. It's not bad, but season 1 was so good and this season is so "meh". I'm waiting for the show to redeem itself.

I'm waiting for the show to redeem itself. I've been enjoying it so far but I only just started watching it so I've had the benefit of seeing the first 4 eps back to back. Considering we're halfway through, my primary issue is that I just don't care about anyone or anything I'm looking at. I haven't thought about the show once since episode 4 ended. Compared to last year when I couldn't stop thinking about it - though now that I think about it, that was in large part due to the Robert Chambers mythos behind the whole thing and so not really something to applaud the makers of the show for. At this point last season people were already ranking it amongst the best shows of all time; the last three eps saw a slight dip in quality that probably saw it slip into the second tier for most, but even then it was a country mile away from season 2. The fact everybody watching it now seems to just be hoping they can salvage something decent out of what's left to come kind of says it all. Disappointing.

Well, Donny was right about the time jump, which I think was definitely the right way to go. Everyone now is in pretty rough shape after the fallout of the shootout. Some of the dialogue in the episode was a bit much, but the mystery itself is being more seriously looked into and the pieces are starting to come together more in terms of motive and the major players in the picture. Plus, the last scene of Ray at Frank's door promises to be very interesting next week. Only 3 episodes left to go.

They just need to go back to Woody and Matt for next season. Two PIs working their way through the swamps to find the real Yellow King and his crew.
I am not believing that either Errol Childress or Sam Tuttle is the Yellow King. Too many easter eggs and hints left unanswered so they have more to investigate.
Maybe he is behind the dealings that got Casper killed and it will all tie back into season 1?

Yeah, their story was far more interesting, no doubt. But I can't help but feel like their stories are over, you know? That line at the end of season one citing "we didn't get all of them", "yeah, but we got our guy" to me signifies that even though both of them know the real culprits are still out there that they likely will never be caught and they've played as large a role in the matter as they could have. But I'm with you, I'd love to see the two of them back in action. Maybe they've made their way to Los Angeles in an M. Night style twist.
But judging on what they found in the shed at the cabin Caspere owned (or was using, I forget who owned the actual spot) it seems like the occult theme is still prevalent, which I was hoping would resurface to kind of loosely connect the two seasons. This time around though it seems that instead of taking down only fall guys and little fish, the detectives this season have the ability to go right after the top people, especially if they can secure that hard drive. A review blurb on RT said that this was the first episode that the mystery actually felt like it mattered and was central to the plot, and I agree with that.

Easily the strongest episode of this season. Things are finally starting to come together and get interesting. I can't wait to see how things pan out with Frank and Ray.
I think Farrell's mustache was a jinx. The show starts to get good once he gets rid of it. Coincidence? I think not...

Do you have one for Vince Vaughn's "blue balls in your heart" line? I had to rewind that one to make sure I heard it correctly.

Haha, awesome, there have been some hilariously absurd bits of dialogue this season. Every main character has said at least one thing that's thrown me entirely off guard.
"Is that a fucking e-cigarette!?" Hahaha!

I personally enjoyed the 'poison cooze' line myself.
The acting is still pretty bad but that was the strongest episode we have seen so far.

If the second half of this season matches this week's episode I may end up legitimately enjoying it. Until then I'm going to enjoy making fun of the ridiculous bits. So I have a new avatar and signature courtesy of True Detective.
