‘True Detective’ Adds Kelly Reilly, Abigail Spencer, Michael Irby and Leven RambinThe new additions will recur heavily on Season 2 of HBO's hit drama starring Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn and Taylor Kitsch HBO has mostly locked down their leads for Season 2 of “True Detective,” and now they're moving onto casting supporting and recurring roles around Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn and Taylor Kitsch. Michael Irby, Kelly Reilly, Abigail Spencer and Leven Rambin are all signing on for heavily recurring roles on the second season of HBO's hit drama, an individual with knowledge of the castings told TheWrap. Season 2 of “True Detective” will focus on three police officers and a career criminal navigating a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder. Farrell will play Ray Velcoro, a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him, while Kitsch is playing Paul Woodrough, a handsome, 28-year-old military veteran who has seen his own share of violence and destruction. Vaughn will play Frank Semyon, a career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner. The final lead role, police detective Ani Bezzerides, is likely to go to Rachel McAdams, though her deal has not yet closed. Irby is taking on the role of Elvis Ilinca, McAdams’ character's partner at the police department. He is expected to appear in five or six episodes of the Season's eight episodes. No word yet on who the other actors are playing. The eight episode hour-long drama is set to begin production later this fall in California. “True Detective” is created and written by Nic Pizzolatto. HBO declined TheWrap's request for comment. Greene & Associates Talent Agency and Coronel Group represent Irby. ICM and Troika represent Reilly. ICM and Untitled Entertainment represent Spencer. Paradigm and Management 360 represent Rambin. www.thewrap.com/true-detective-adds-kelly-reilly-abigail-spencer-michael-irby-and-leven-rambin/

Sounds interesting. I just recently got access to HBO Go and binge watched the first season in the span of 2 days.

So did MM win any actual awards for this?
If not there has been a severe injustice.
Let's remind ourselves of the perfect moments of season 1:
"To realize that all your life, all your love, all your hate, all your memories, all your pain, it was all the same thing. It was all the same dream, a dream that you had inside a locked room, a dream about being a person. And like a lot of dreams, there's a monster at the end of it..."
The similarities between Rust and Coop are interesting, if you Google them.

Just finished the first season a few weeks ago, what a knockout of a show, I've never seen anything quite like it. I'm not sure how they'll top the first season, but I'd love to see them do it. Ruhst Cole was one of the most unique and complex characters ever drawn out in fictional material of any kind, he was superb.

I agree. They opened up so strong and now with a new cast, I just fear the show can only go downhill. Too bad they could not keep Woody and MM tied up for at least another season. The two of them being PIs would be good.

I agree. They opened up so strong and now with a new cast, I just fear the show can only go downhill. Too bad they could not keep Woody and MM tied up for at least another season. The two of them being PIs would be good. Yeah, that would've been nice, though in a way I think their stories are essentially done. At the end when Rust says "we didn't get all of them" and then Martin replies "yeah, but we got ours" I viewed that as them acknowledging that they can never touch the elites that rule these occults, but have to settle for taking at least some evil out of the world which was a pretty profound statement. Though essentially they could always find themselves in a completely different case, but I think the writer is focused on occult dealings to tie in each season. But yes, it's hard to believe that we'll get a dynamic as strong as what those two displayed, they were perfect. Two very different characters yet also were deeply flawed in similar ways. They seem to be taking their time with Season 2, which is a good sign, but it's a tough act to follow. Plus, I might live in California, but I don't think the setting is nearly as interesting as the backwoods New Orleans environment. It worked so well because of the decayed towns from the hurricanes, the deep rooted families and secrets of the South, etc. But hey, I'll be watching every second and I hope it's outstanding. Even a slight drop off from the first season will be great television.

I just hope that there's as much surrealism as there was in season one. That's what sold me.

That's a good question, I think a lot of it really worked well because it was in tune with Rust's character of being pretty out there and that perhaps his drug use unleashed this spiritual awakening in him. Maybe they'll have a character like that, but man it's just so hard to see them crafting a character as interesting as him. He was just as mesmerizing to watch as the actual mystery was.

The writer got a lot of stick from wannabe scriptwriters online, especially for the last episode. One questionable decision apparently undoes 7 hours of beautifully choreographed interaction.
Fuck off.
I'd love to see any of the complainants do better.
And I also think the second season won't come close to the first in terms of overall quality but it'll still be unmissable.

I hated the epilogue as much as anyone else when I first watched it. I still don't think it makes sense for the character to make a 180 degree turn, but that is more based off my personal bias I think. But watching it a second time I think it was more nuanced than I gave it credit for.
Still a great show, but the ending kind of hurt it, not as much as say Lost's ending, but still hurt it more than it helped.

You guys are referring to their end discussion at the hospital? I didn't mind it, I thought that when Rust is discussing that he almost let himself go to be with his daughter was interesting because, especially since he's an atheist, he's almost conforming to a Christian ideology of an afterlife. I didn't mind it so much, I looked at it more like they were facing ultimate evil head-on and that maybe in his desperation he wanted to forgo his cynicism in order to be reunited with her again. I read an excellent analysis the other day where they interpreted it more as Rust sees his daughter in a place where the occult doesn't exist; they have power on Earth but not beyond it, not where the "good" people will go anyways. So that comforted him a little bit that after witnessing so much evil in the world that in death there is a release from it and he can live in peaceful bliss after he dies. Not saying that's right or wrong, but an interesting take for sure. I didn't have an issue with the last episode at all, I think people sometimes want these shows to have some big reveal or some finality to the mystery, when in reality that doesn't work. We can all assume (I think correctly) that the "killer" was just a patsy, and the true culprits and Yellow King(s) would never be caught , and for some people that's just not wrapped up nicely enough. They want their mysteries to be laid to rest with a nice bow on top, and I applaud this show for NOT doing that. It makes it far more effective knowing that the occult elite can likely never be caught or destroyed, and I think that notion also enhances Rust's near-death experience in the last episode. Some powers are too strong for anyone to overcome, and I find that to be a very haunting conclusion that the show makes.

Selfishly I want my prediction that Vaughn will be a great actor in this from the original CS site for future generations... but alas, it is lost forever.

Good enough teaser but still not excited. Will be tuning in opening night of course. I think I would be much happier with it if Taylor Kitsch was not in it. I do not understand why Hollywood insists on putting this guy in any kind of lead role.

Yeah Kitsch stinks, hopefully he's not getting too much screen time each episode. I enjoyed the teaser, I don't think it'll relinquish any skeptics (like me) that it'll top the first season, but it looks like it has the makings of being strong television. Just a teaser so can't say much one way or the other, but I'm definitely very excited for June 21st.

Yeah I was thinking it'd be later too since we hadn't seen or heard much up to this point. But even after the teaser it's evident that they're a lot farther along than any of us thought, which is great.

Getting nothing from the trailer, Farrell's hopeless look is the only thing looking to equal season one. I feel like that was a one in a million though.

Yeah, there's not a lot to mull over from the trailer. I'm betting the next one will be more informative.
