3 weeks away.
Hopes? Dreams?
I think Vaughan is going to run away with it.
"We get the world we deserve."
Says it all really. I think we'll see some very impressive writing. He may have fudged the ending of season one but Pizzolatto was responsible for some of the best dialogue of the last decade. McConaughey's delivery played a part, obvs, but for the good of television let's hope it wasn't a one hit wonder.

Btw, I love that in the above trailer each of the 4 leads gets exactly one line of dialogue.

If it is half as good as season 1 it will be better than a good majority of crap on tv now. That being said, hoping for it to be half is good is a big wish. Vaughn can pull it off but the rest of the cast I am not so sure about. Especially Kitsch. I hope he ruins the show. I just want this to be the final nail in the coffin of his shitty career. It is worth sacrificing this show to make him go away.

I really liked season 1, but I really dont see how this format is going to make this a must watch show for me.

I'm going to start Season 1 in the next day or so. Hopefully I'll be done or just about done by the time the next season premieres on Sunday.

The new season premieres tonight. I'm curious to see who'll replace Alexandra Daddario as the Internet's biggest sensation.

Early reviews of the first three episodes are not good, kind of think this isn't going to recapture the sensation surrounding season 1.

And hence the problem with this type of format.

And hence the problem with this type of format. It works for American Horror Story.

Won't be able to watch it tonight, will have to wait til after work tomorrow. I'm hoping for the best, but early reviews have been sadly ho-hum.

I don't think it was awful, but it's definitely trying a little hard in certain scenes. The three main cops are all these weird, dark and brooding loner types, somewhat similar to Rust Cohle. Though, to be fair, I think Colin Farrell's character is a lot more insane this early on. And secondly, anything this show tries to do as a follow up makes for an unfair comparison.
It's not a show to judge after one episode. I'm going to see where this goes, but there things I like. I like Vaughn a lot so far, and the plot has a lot of moving pieces, most of which are fairly intriguing. Writing, however, isn't as sharp, and is juggling much more than I expected at this point. And for a few scenes, I couldn't really tell if they were good, or over the top, which isn't a great sign.

It did a good job to make sure we aren't rooting for any of these awful, wretched people.

Yeah, hard to say much one way or the other after the first episode. It certainly retains that heavy, ominous atmosphere, though the jumping between 4 characters instead of 2 already seems like it's getting too busy already. Still, it wasn't the disaster some have already labeled it as, guess we just have to see where it goes from here.

Not impressed at all. I give it two more episodes to improve or I am done.

I had read the early reviews and kinda didn't expect much, I kinda liked it. Does seem to be juggling too many characters so far, and everyone is so aware they are working on True Detective.

it's definitely trying a little hard in certain scenes. It's like the makers of True Detective saw Fargo and thought to themselves, "we gotta step up our game."

Yeah, the director Justin Lin is known for his recent Fast and the Furious outings, and it seemed clear he's way out of his element here and was trying his best to imitate the first season. I enjoyed the episode as well, for the most part, but it was obvious that this hard boiled edge felt a bit forced, especially with Farrell's character. Lin can shoot the hell out of flashy cars and over the top action sequences, but any handling of pseudo conversations or character development that isn't completely on the nose (as it was here, we got everyone's back stories right away as opposed to a gradual build) seems to be way too much for the guy.

We got everyone's back stories right away as opposed to a gradual build Because we have 4 main characters instead of 2. There's no room for gradual build up. These characters have to share a running time of 40-50 minutes per episode so they can't waste time on nonsense. Every second has to count.

There's 7 more episodes and I feel like all the cards were laid on the table right away. I'm sure there's more underlying complexities to the characters, but they could've left some things (like the rape of Farrell's wife) to be at least a little more subtle. Whatever, we'll see where they go with it, that's the important part.

Rachel McAdams is still dealing with her family issues. Vince Vaughn has a lot of shit going on. John Carter has more opportunities to get his dick sucked. There's room to explore more stuff.
