Yeah, it's a decent idea for the run-up until a vaccine, but how many movie theaters are going to last with stuff like this going on?

I don't care what virus is out there, I'm seeing Godzilla vs. Kong in theaters.

FanibleTheatres, for the most part, are dead. The chains will figure out a way to remain alive but with greatly reduced real estate. Right now, at least in my neck of the woods, the chains are operating at minimum hours. We're talking one or two shows per day, typically a 4pm and 7pm. The local/mom-and-pop theatres aren't even opening Monday thru Thursday. They're a weekend-only operation. And no one (not even the chains) are making a profit right now. Everyone is running at a loss with the mindset that making some money is better than making no money. But this won't be sustainable. In the next 3 to 6 months, most theatres will shut down for good. In the major cities, maybe a handful of locations will stick around, maybe less. In flyover states, like 1godzillafan's Idaho, maybe one or two theatres will stick around per county. The future is streaming. Cinema had, what, 120 years? Good run. At least we got Avengers: Endgame. I just feel bad for James Cameron. Dude took so long that those Avatar sequels will end up getting dumped on Disney+.

I'll make every effort to see the ones I want to see in theaters, if possible.

Gonna make the effort with Wonder Woman 84. Support your local theatre... although I know you want that Dolby (or IMAX) experience. And buy concessions. Even if it's just a soda.

I think the death of movie theaters are greatly exaggerated. There will still be a large market that wants to go to the movies. They'll make everything automated and reduce staff and probably have to drop all those old shitty theaters people seem to like. Multiplexes probably also will go by the wayside.
But it'll still be around.

I think the death of movie theaters are greatly exaggerated. All of them are near bankruptcy. It'll be a niche market once every movie is premiering on HBO Max/Disney+/Peacock/CBS All Access. This also means the potential defeat of Netflix. That was already the case before covid. No doubt. But the chains already knew that. Most (if not all) of the newer (or renovated) theatres are much smaller than the stadium sized theatres we were getting 20 or 30 years ago.

They have to provide incentives for people to see these movies in theaters. Collector's booklets, Q&As, special trailers, whatever. I know this seems improbable but if theaters don't give the casual filmgoer a reason to leave their home when they can watch Dune or the newest Matrix in their living room then it's over. And even then, what I'm mentioning are things that largely only people who do love going to the theaters would be interested in.
I'm seeing Dune on a big screen. Same with Matrix. Same with any of the big films I'm highly interested in. I suppose this is the way things were trending anyways, but I don't really like it. The movie theater is one of the last bastions from phones, distractions, etc. where you give the movie your undivided attention. I think there's still a lot of people who will cherish and want that, but this is a huge blow to distribution chains.

Let’s hope this forces theaters to at least lower their prices. It’s one thing to prefer the ‘theater experience’ but a lot fewer people will prefer paying $20 to watch a crappy movie in theaters if they can watch the same crappy movie at home.

Studios are investing in streaming. I expect there will be less theatrical releases going forward.

They took down that law that said studios couldn't own theaters right?
My prediction, studios start buying theaters, exclusively play their movies there, and jack up the price because theater going will be a niche demand while general public stays home. Independently owned theaters that show indies might still be reasonable though, because they're catering directly to the niche that loves the theater experience.
I base this off of nothing and have pulled it out my ass.

They said the movie exhibition industry will resemble Broadway. Depending on where you live, you’ll have that one theatre or a street of theatres, and they’ll charge a premium price for tickets. Or they’ll keep tickets relatively cheap and do a dine-in, like Alamo Drafthouse, and over-charge for the food.

The big movies, as long as they're getting solid reviews, I'll definitely see in the theater anyway.
