This mostly affects U.S. releases. Internationally, the movies will still get a proper theatrical release.

I think it's going to put a lot of pressure on other studios to do the same at least with some of their catalogue. I know I joke around about it but look at Free Guy. Initially it was going to be released in July right in between Wonder Woman, Top Gun and Ghostbusters. It would have been wrecked. Then they pushed it to December and now it's in TBD. It's the perfect kind of movie that should be given to a streaming service like Hulu where people will see it available and go 'yeah, I'll watch that on my couch and kill a couple hours rather than shell out $15 to see it in theaters and maybe get covid.' Every day that thing sits on the shelf it costs them money, I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled the trigger for a lot of these ones that should be out by now and launch them.

Free Guy was one that was inherited from Fox, right? I recall the word being that Fox had a clause in the contract during the sale to Disney that they couldn't take the movies in the pipeline and dump them on streaming. That was the whole reason New Mutants was kicked around all year.

Every day that thing sits on the shelf it costs them money But the question is how many of these super expensive movies are streaming services going to be willing to pay for. I'm not sure what Free Guy's budget was, but it would presumably cost Hulu tens of millions of dollars to buy the rights to it and cover that budget. Are they going to attract enough new members to pay for that? Doubtful. There is something to be said for providing content to keep existing viewers around, but there are probably cheaper ways to do it. Splurging for the rights to Palm Springs at Sundance is one thing, buying the rights to a mainstream Hollywood movie is another. Netflix can probably afford to spluge on an Irishman a year but even they don't really have the money to be making tentpoles more expensive than, like, The Old Guard. HBO Max and Disney+ are sort of exceptions in that they are only recently becoming established and need to leverage the conglomerates to provide them with some high profile loss-leaders that will get them subscribers, but I doubt they'll be able to do that long term.

Correct, Fox had a long term deal with HBO pre-acquisition that their movies would get fully promoted theatrical runs then play on HBO for a certain window.

And given that theatrical clause for Fox movies, I'm kind of surprised Disney isn't trying to dump the supposedly-terrible The Woman in the Window in theaters now with minimal fanfare like they did with The New Mutants just to get it out/wash their hands of it. I remember Netflix being in "final talks" to acquire it months ago, but nothing since. I assume if it goes to Netflix, though, that would violate the same theatrical clause New Mutants had and Free Guy does.

And that's why theaters won't die.
Blockbusters will still be huge. A listers still gonna be a listers.
The world would be a real shitty place if only Netflix made movies anymore. Miss me with that timeline.

That one was from Fox 2000, which might have a different contract than their slate of tentpoles. Not 100% sure.

Doomsday SnoBorderZeroChristopher Nolan: There's such controversy around it, because they didn't tell anyone. In 2021, they've got some of the top filmmakers in the world, they've got some of the biggest stars in the world who worked for years in some cases on these projects very close to their hearts that are meant to be big-screen experiences. They're meant to be out there for the widest possible audiences... And now they're being used as a loss-leader for the streaming service -- for the fledgling streaming service -- without any consultation. So, there's a lot of controversy. It's very, very, very, very messy. A real bait and switch. Yeah, it's sort of not how you treat filmmakers and stars and people who, these guys have given a lot for these projects. They deserved to be consulted and spoken to about what was going to happen to their work.

50? Shit, imagine watching Avengers: Endgame with 400 other people. They say that’s where Covid got started.

I read a news article today about plans to build a new Alamo Drafthouse in 2021 in my area. I was more than a little surprised, obviously. With one piece of bad news coming on the heels of the next for months now, I'd given up any notion of new theaters being built anytime soon, much less next year.

My guess is they had already leased the location prior to the pandemic. That doesn’t necessarily mean they have the budget to build a new theatre in 2021. My job is on the same boat. They’re literally paying rent on an empty lot cause 2020 disrupted everyone’s plans. Alamo probably couldn’t even sublease cause, other than Amazon and grocery stores, which businesses actually made a profit this year and are looking to expand?

I'm a moviegoer on the edge! I've no doubt that the ball began rolling on this project before the pandemic started, but the local franchisee did confirm the plans for the project in the article. The plans filed with the city say they plan to begin construction in late January 2021. The last location they built around here didn't break ground on time, and that was long before COVID. This same franchisee has also had plans in the past that eventually fell through entirely, also before the pandemic. What's important is that they see room for expansion, and intend to fill it.

They should've consulted the filmmakers. Yes, Warner Bros. owns these films and can do with them what they see fit. But not including the filmmakers in the discussion process is what has pissed so many in the industry off and is just a bad look for the studio overall, hence why Nolan has taken the stance that he has.

They want their money... A-list directors and A-list actors get percentage of box office gross. WB already cut checks for Gal Gadot and the WW84 profit participants. That's why you haven't heard a word from them. They're gonna have to do the same for everyone else.
