I wasn't too impressed with The African Queen, it wasn't nearly as interesting as the reputation for it. The love story was annoying and Bogart didn't work for me as the feeble boat operator. Maybe I just wanted it to be more like the jungle cruise ride at Disneyland. Not a bad movie, just more stating why I'm not putting it on my list. Really? I love it. But I'm okay with it not being on this list. PG has good choices. Yeah, but I'm not a Katherine Hepburn fan either. I also wasn't too impressed by The Philadelphia Story, but to be fair I've only watched each of these once.

I'm not too big on The African Queen (I'd like to revisit it) but Katharine Hepburn rules.

Katherine Hepburn also grates on me. Her proto-feminist persona might have been really interesting at one point but it's long outlived her usefulness, her voice is really annoying, and she's kind of the same in every single movie.

Day the Earth Stood Still, The: Cool science fiction film that has stood the test of time. Strangers on a Train: One of the better Hitchcock movies The River: Cool Renoir film with some excellent technicolor A Streetcar Named Desire: A step towards Hollywood's maturation, broke out Marlon Brando and his special acting style. The Lavender Hill Mob: An excellent example of the Ealing comedies. Oh yeah, I remember you reviewed the River on my site.

Her proto-feminist persona might have been really interesting at one point but it's long outlived her usefulness, her voice is really annoying, and she's kind of the same in every single movie. She had a certain persona, but most of the classic Hollywood actors seem to. Besides, there's nuance in her roles stretching from Little Women, to Alice Adams, to Bringing Up Baby, to The Lion in Winter.

Since The Thing from Another World and Diary of a Country Priest have no takers, I'll throw my support to Ace in the Hole. For a fifth, I'm not sure between The African Queen and The River.

I mean, The River is definitely a better movie (though I'm not incredibly high or partial to it either) but African Queen is the more widely viewed film. I say The River, but not gonna lose sleep over it either.

This is a bit of a crap shoot...
1. The Outlaw and His Wife: Apparently this was groundbreaking for portraying nature on film. Also another Victor Sjöström film.
2. The Blue Bird: It's well-reviewed and in the National Film Registry.
3. Tarzan of the Apes: First Tarzan adaptation and considered the most true to the source.
4. A Trip to Mars: Early space opera film.
5. Hearts of the World: D.W. Griffith propaganda film.

A Dog's Life and Shoulder Arms are both great Chaplin Two-reelers, otherwise I got nothing.

Well, we'd like to stay away from shorts if possible, unless we have to. I thikn unless anyone finds anything else, we go with Coop's like. Well done Coop.

Yeah... I got nothing, absolutely nothing. We'll go with Cooper's list and award him a gold star from 1918. It's painted in lead, you win!

I feel like it's a mistake to ignore shorts when you're dealing with the really early days of cinema. Features didn't rule the world at this point.

I think Drac makes a good argument for them, and there are certain shorts that are must-haves for the list (Un Chien Andalou).
I don't know if we need both Chaplin shorts for 1918, but I think we could drop out Hearts of the World (we already have a lot of Griffith and this seems one of his lesser works of the era). The question is what short do we use? Shoulder Arms seems a bit more important, but I'd trust Dracula's judgement on this.

Dog's Life is probably better, but yeah, Shoulder Arms is a lot more innovative with its dark satire.

1. The Battleship Potemkin: Editing becomes an art form. Also features one of the most famous movie scenes ever.
2. The Gold Rush: Classic Chaplin.
3. The Phantom of the Opera: Chaney's make-up is an extremely famous image and the film paved the way for the Universal Monster films of the 1930s and 40s.
4. The Big Parade: A huge hit in its day and one of the first films about the horrors of war.
5. The Lost World: Giant monsters and cutting edge special effects.
Honourable Mentions:
Seven Chances, Go West, and The Freshman: Notable films from silent comedy greats Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd.
Strike: Sergei Eisenstein's other major film from 1925.
Master of the House: Carl Theodor Dryer, baby.
