If no one is going for Sling Blade then I would go for ID4. Solid film, helped launch Will Smith, "Welcome to Erff", and also kick starting the destroy everything films into high gear.

Well I'm pretty sure I'm not going to talk anyone into voting for La Promesse, so I guess I'll switch my vote to Breaking the Waves.

Right now we have: Fargo Bottle Rocket Trainspotting Scream Need a 5th. Primal Fear- Edward Norton's breakout performance. Lots of other excellent deliveries from great character actors like Laura Linney, John Mahoney, Frances McDormand, Alfre Woodard, Terry O'Quinn and the always awesome Andre Brauer. Richard Gere was good, too.

I'm voting for Breaking the Waves. Even though that asshole Von Trier has used the same, damn basic plotline ever since. (Female protagonist is put through the fucking ringer for two and a half hours) But this is probably his best film, at least of what I've seen from him anyways.

I would argue that his last three films are pretty different. Yes technically they're still about women being put through a ringer but the protagonists are a lot stronger than the naive waifs in the "innocence" trilogy and the overall tone is much different.

That's true, in Nymphomaniac she's her own destruction and willingly places herself into these situations. You don't feel bad for her really. Melancholia you can definitely make that argument as well. I just remember watching Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark, and Dogville almost back-to-back-to-back and I was like huh, I've seen this before... But Breaking the Waves is still his strongest film (haven't seen Europa still) to me and he accomplished what he did at the height of the Dogme 95 movement which is another reason it earns my vote.

1. The Bicycle Thief: Not the first Italian Neorealist film, but the most iconic and influential.
2. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre: One of the touchstones of American films based around greed. Influenced a number of different filmmakers.
3. Rope: The single shot format is groundbreaking.
4. The Red Shoes: Amazing technicolor photography, possibly the Archer's most famous work, and influential on subsequent dance films from An American in Paris to Black Swan.
5. Hamlet: Widely seen as the greatest screen version of the play and clearly had an influence on Shakespearean adaptations which would come from Hollywood after.
Honourable Mentions:
The Naked City: The location shooting seemed a big deal for it's day.
Key Largo: Great movie, but the only Huston film we really need from this year is Sierra Madre.

The Bicycle Thief: No brainer The Red Shoes: No brainer Treasure of the Sierra Madre: No brainer Rope: First to attempt a stunt that others would repeat Red River: First movie to start to challenge the John Wayne persona

Dracula 's list seems more accurate than PG Cooper 's. I mean... Hamlet? Come on, man. Kenneth Branagh pretty much took ownership of all the Shakespeare shit. They don't even make Shakespeare shit anymore. After Branagh it's like... yeah... we have enough to torture high school kids for the next hundred years. Branagh is such an ass he made a Hamlet movie right after Mel Gibson made one. The guy made sure that for the rest of time only his movies are shown at schools. The only reason he didn't make Romeo & Juliet is because monopolies are illegal. Point is... No one gives a fuck about no damn Hamlet from the 1940's. We barely give a fuck about the two that were made in the 90's. So... yeah... John Wayne FTW.
