Except an entire generation of children are growing up with these movies and in 20 years they'll fondly remember them. Damn you, stop making sense! Just wait till Johnny Depp dancing resurfaces on the Internet in a few years.

Alice in Wonderland seems like it's gonna make it. Not my dream choice, but we're in a tough spot. What about the fifth? Black Swan or Toy Story 3 seem like good options to me.

Were talking about Disney and you're all seriously considering Alice in Wonderland over Tangled...

I'd way rather see Toy Story 3 make the list, it was easily one of the best films of that year. On a side note this is my 10,000th post on here! Over 11 years later and I'm finally in the 5 digits, woot! I personally want to thank Neverending for providing me with tons of reasons to comment, argue, and scoff at. I couldn't have done it without you and your endless tagging.

But there's nothing that puts TS3 on an important list. I mean, its a sequel. You can love it, and think its one of the best films of the year (it is after all), but it shouldn't be on this list. I think Black Swan has more relevance.

Maybe this year doesn't deserve 5 slots?

Except an entire generation of children are growing up with these movies and in 20 years they'll fondly remember them. Damn you, stop making sense! I want to be making choices on this list that will stand the test of time. In twenty years we all will have forgotten this wave of live action fairy tale movies just like we forgot the previous waves of this trend which gave us the likes of this, this, and this. Besides, Alice in Wonderland shouldn't even be given the credit, I mentioned Enchanted before, and of course the last Tim Burton family movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory almost certainly influenced AiW to be made in the first place. Let's go with Black Swan and... well if we must include a family movie we might as well go with the one that people actually like and pick Toy Story 3.

How is Black Swan influential? If anything, Perfect Blue is the one to influence Black Swan since it's largely the same movie (and the better one):
Aronofsky has said that he was a fan of Satoshi Kon's, even buying the rights to Perfect Blue to mimic a famous shot in it for for Requiem for a Dream:

No pity votes. Keep the list to 3 or 4 if it is a crap year.

Okay, I'm pulling the plug on this one. Social Network, Inception, Alice in Wonderland, Fighter, Toy Story 3. Those seem to be the ones most vehemently argued for. We can reassess later if need be, but for now lets move on.

1. Fargo: Without a doubt. One of the most revered films of the last 25 years.
2. Scream: I'm not a fan, but there's no doubt this film led to a resurgence of the slasher genre and has influenced several meta/satirical horror movies since.
3. Trainspotting: Launched the career and style of Danny Boyle. It's fast, kinetic energy definitely influenced guys like Guy Ritchie. Also has some iconic moments.
4. Bottle Rocket: Introduced the Wes Anderson aesthetic that indie filmmakers have been "borrowing" ever since.
5. Breaking the Waves: A breakthrough for Lars Von Trier, artistically and, to some extent, commercially.
Honourable mentions:
Hamlet and Romeo + Juliet: Both major Shakepspeare adaptations which are memorable for different reasons, but I don't know if they've really been influential.
Mission: Impossible: Launched a huge franchise. Feautures some famous set-pieces.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame: Maybe not important, but Disney deserves some credit for some of their ballsier choices here.

I thought about ID4 and Cable Guy but could not justify them as important.
Birdcage? No way.

People who haven't re-watched The Cable Guy in 19 years don't know how ahead of its time it was. Jim Carrey pretty much predicted the 21st century. No one cares about that movie anymore. It doesn't have the "America, fuck yeah" element like Independence Day.
