Important Movies

I'm okay with Red River, but if we do leave off Hamlet, than we should have Olivier's Henry V when we get to 1944.

That makes more sense.

I can get behind Drac/Sno/Neverending's list.

1. Rashomon: Important for a bunch of different reasons. As Drac would/will say; no brainer.

2. Sunset Boulevard: Also a no brainer. One of the most famous films of the decade and probably the best movie about movies ever made.

3. All About Eve: Another stone-cold classic.

4. The Asphalt Jungle: Pioneer of the heist film. I don't know if this was the first film to show a bunch of hoods meticulously planning/executing a robbery only for things to fall apart, but it's one of the most famous examples. There's a direct lineage from this to Rififi, The Killing, Thief, Reservoir Dogs, Heat, and others.

5. Cinderella: Disney's biggest hit critically and financially since Snow White and a film that actually helped save the company. Movies like Pinocchio, Fantasia, and Bambi had actually lost money (it was in re-releases that they starting making their money and became classics). Without the success of Cinderella, Disney and film history might have turned out very different. Beyond that, this is one of the most famous and acclaimed of Disney classics.

The Jackie Robinson Story - well received even in an era when black people were still not given equal rights. Also starred Robinson himself.

Harvey - how can this not be one of the best in the year - most memorable comedy, very charming film - and how can you not like a 6 foot invisible rabbit?

I swear to god if the next year is between 1900-1935 I will hunt you down and make you watch "Glitter" on repeat for 87 hours straight.

Alright, we're going with those 5 then.

Do the Right Thing: An acknowledged classic
Batman: Changed the way blockbusters are made and marketed in a number of ways
Sex, Lies, and Videotape: Steven Soderbergh's first, played a big role in launching the independent film boom of the 90s
Drugstore Cowboy: Gus Van Sant's breakthrough, also an important movie in launching the indie boom
The Abyss:  Will forever be remembered as the movie with one of the most difficult shoots of all time.  Also, that CGI water tentacle was pretty innovative.

Do the Right Thing - Spike Lee's best movie

Batman - a unique vision, set the tone for how the character was portrayed on film and in other media for over a decade.

Sex, Lies, and Videotape - indie movie boom

Henry V - one of the best Shakespeare adaptations of all time, set the tone for almost all the others since. Inspiring filmmaking. Watch the "Non Nobis Domine" and try not to tear up, I dare you.


Field of Dreams - since we failed to include Bull Durham or Hoosiers, I'm taking another shot here. Iconic film.
