I cant find an eye roll smiley. For the record, the American version of 1954's Godzilla is ridiculous. That's why I said "Gojira." I don't want people getting confused that we're rooting for the wrong version of the movie. In case you weren't aware, the American distributors thought the movie was too Japanese and added in Raymond Burr as an American reporter investigating the incidents in the movie. I haven't seen Carmen Jones, but I might be open to it. It's a 1950's musical, based on a Broadway play, so I highly doubt you'll like it. Hey, I'm open to it. I've wikipedia'd it, but I can't tell how successful it was at breaking barriers or what have you. What else do you know about it? Like I said, it was the first MAJOR Hollywood film to star Black actors. Dorothy Dandridge, the lead in the movie, became the first African-American to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. It was a box office success, ranking as the 7th highest grossing film of the year, which is very impressive when you consider this is 1950's America going to watch a movie with a Black person as the star. This film opened the door for Sidney Poitier to become a leading man in the late 1950's and 1960's. So while it may be a silly musical from the 1950's, it broke racial barriers.

Okay, everyone seems to agree on Seven Samurai, Rear Window, On the Waterfront, and Godzilla. So what about a fifth?
If we look at votes, La Strada has 3 (Dracula, thebtskink, and myself) but Neverending has made a pretty compelling case for Carmen Jones. Should we put it to a vote between those two films? Also, iv3rdawg, do you wanna make a final push for Dial M for Murder?

I'm willing to give Neverending his Carman Jones, there are plenty of other opportunities to give Fellini his due.

I haven't seen either but I know The Grand Illusion and Make Way for Tomorrow are well regarded. I'm sure someone will make their case.

The Grand Illusion is considered one of the greatest French movies of all-time, but I don't think anyone cares about Make Way for Tomorrow except for, maybe, people of a certain age.

1. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: The first full-length animated feature and the film which set the status quo for Disney. Also quite an undertaking in its day.
2. Grand Illusion: Jean Renoir is a very important filmmaker and this is one of his most revered works. It received a number of accolades and was the first foreign film to be nominated for Best Picture.
3. A Star is Born: An interesting early example of colour in film which also features a very serious depiction of alcoholism and some dark turns. It's not exactly a great movie, but there's some interesting stuff there.
4. The Awful Truth: Famous screwball comedy with Cary Grant.
5. Make Way for Tomorrow: The film is held in very high regard and is said to be a big influence on Orson Welles, Errol Morris, and the film Tokyo Story.

It's not exactly a great movie, but there's some interesting stuff there. I only included this movie because it has two remakes, one in the 1950's with Judy Garland and another in the 1970's with Barbara Streisand. And Clint Eastwood is currently developing a third remake which is set to star Beyonce. I think we can blame this movie for launching Hollywood's obsession with remakes.

Oh, I thought Snow White was 38 or some reason. It is. But... Hollywood has always been the same. Snow White had a "limited" run in December 1937 so it could qualify for the Academy Awards, where it received a nomination for its music and was awarded a special prize for its groundbreaking animation. The movie, however, wasn't released to a wide audience till February 1938 and it became the highest grossing film of the year and also one of the biggest money-makers of all-time. Adjusted for inflation, Snow White made $885 million domestically and ranks as the 10th most successful movie in the history of the North American box office.

Grand Illusion: A classic of world cinema Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: First animated feature, made Disney an institution, yada yada yada Lost Horizon: Not a very good movie (also kind of racist) but there are a lot of ideas and scenes in it that seem to have been picked up elsewhere. Make Way for Tomorrow: Influential melodrama A Star is Born: The movie that just wouldn't go away.

Based on what everyone said:
The Grand Illusion Make Way for Tomorrow Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which Dracula is CLEARLY a fan of. A Star Is Born
So again, it comes down to a 5th movie and I don't see anyone enthusiastic about any choice. So may I suggest that we break the rules and go with a radical thing? The Hindenburg Newsreel Footage, while not technically a movie, is an important historical event and was watched in the cinema. Television didn't exist back then. People watched that blimp exploded at the movie theaters. So... I think we should count it.

Maybe if its a case like Triumph of the Will where the importance of the footage actually has something to do with filmmaking, but otherwise I don't think we should delve into canonizing newsreel footage.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarves The Grand Illusion (best film of the year no doubt) Make Way for Tomorrow (very good McCarey film, directly influenced Ozu's masterpiece "Tokyo Story")
I did not like "The Awful Truth" and the Best Picture winner "The Life of Emile Zola" was worse. The '30s are my least favorite decade of film with the '40s right behind it.
