Re: Down By Law. I do think we should have an early Jarmusch movie represented on one of these years. The thing is, I feel like Stranger Than Paradise is obviously the better one to do it, but I'm not sure how competitive 1984 is going to be.

Really not that crazy unless someone tries to sneak in an arthouse movie with zero influence.

Aliens - man that fucker thrilled me to pieces when I saw it in the theater - bunches of memorable moments and awesome hardware
Children of a Lesser God - Matlin's first movie, starring role, carried the film, and I know it left an impression on a lot of people that year - stellar work
Ferris Bueller's Day Off - "You're still here? It's over. Go home. Go." THIS is the movie that made me sit through the ending credits of every movie I have seen since - no lie.
The Fly - brilliant update on a classic movie that creeped me out as a kid, loved the technical aspects and Goldblum's slow descent into becoming a monster was a phenomenal performance.
Top Gun - launched a lot of careers
Honorable mention:
Highlander - Loved the story, action, casting, sound track - the sequels sucked, but the original is still an outstanding film that spawned a really great series for TV - Huge fan

Yeah a lot of different choices this time around with some unanimous ones Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer: A touchstone for down and dirty violence. Well, that surprised me - doesn't sound like one you'd pick

Really not that crazy unless someone tries to sneak in an arthouse movie with zero influence. Indeed. Platoon - If you've ever met anyone who fought in Vietnam, which I'm assuming is none of you, you'd hear them say that Platoon is the only realistic Vietnam movie. The Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket are pure fantasy. Platoon is essentially the Saving Private Ryan of Vietnam movies. Aliens, Ferris Bueller, and Top Gun are not "important" movies but their impact in pop culture cannot be ignored. The fifth spot is tough. There's a lot of candidates. So I'll throw a curve ball and say Crocodile Dundee. Next to Mad Max, it's the biggest thing Australia has given the world.

I have had more than one Vet say Full Metal Jacket is very realistic. Not saying Platoon isn't but don't discount FMJ.

I have had more than one Vet say Full Metal Jacket is very realistic. Not saying Platoon isn't but don't discount FMJ. The training camp scenes, although exaggerated for dramatic effect, are fairly realistic. The war scenes are definitely not. Platoon still holds the crown for the most realistic depiction of the war.

I agree Hoosiers should be in the listing. It's still considered the pinnacle of sports movies as well as just a great film, imo. I know when I'd be talking to people while deployed to kill time and movies come up, Hoosiers is one of the movies even people who don't like sports movies enjoys.

I'm a huge sports person, huge. And I enjoy "Hoosiers" and it's a good enough film, but man, that movie has literally every sports cliche you could come up with. Every sports film will have it's share, but "Hoosiers" checks the box on every single one of them. And yet, it's able to retain a charm and authenticity throughout. You are right, people love that movie.

OKay, so these 4 are in: Aliens Ferris Buehler Blue Velvet Platoon.
Last pick is still open. I think that Henry Serial Killer is a good choice personally for escalating movie violence. Maybe Down by Law, but I dont want to include it just because its from a certain director. Is the film itself important? Stranger than Paradise is the much better option from where I sit.
Interestingly enough, the only two feature films in the national film registry for this year are FFerris Bueler and Hoosiers.

I understand Henry's importance, though to be honest I was pretty disappointed in the movie itself when I watched it. It's graphic and difficult to watch, but it didn't quite live up to the hype. Though, it's a good choice, probably a better choice in terms of importance than "Down by Law", which is a better film but you and Dracula are right that "Stranger than Paradise" is a better representation. I like movies like "The Fly" and "Highlander" and some others mentioned on here a lot more than Henry, but if we're talking importance, Henry wins out.

Henry isn't really a landmark in violence, at least not in my mind. Maybe I should watch it again, but there are earlier examples that stick out in my mind as being pretty violent.

It's not that it was violent, it was more the nasty nature of the film itself. I mean, the ending alone is pretty unforgettable. Just delving into the mindset of a serial killer instead of their acts alone was interesting and different. I think the idea of the film is better than it's execution, but it's generally well regarded.

I think you're all being too quick to dismiss The Fly's importance. However if it really doesn't have a shot, I'll throw my support towards Henry.

I'd rather have "The Fly" because it's a really good movie and Henry is meh, but the argument of importance is what trumps it for myself.

I'd rather have "The Fly" because it's a really good movie and Henry is meh, but the argument of importance is what trumps it for myself. The Fly has ground-breaking make-up effects, some iconic lines, and is a great example of a film which reached a large audience with a pop-culture impact while still being a heavy work of art. It's like Cronenberg's The Elephant Man in that the director didn't sacrifice any of his style yet still found a wide audience.

I think you're all being too quick to dismiss The Fly's importance. David Cronenberg's remake of The Fly exists because of John Carpenter's remake of The Thing. Did we include The Thing in 1982 or did ya'll fuck up again? If The Thing is there, we don't need The Fly. If The Thing isn't there, we can rectify it with The Fly. Regardless, if IanTheCool wasn't stubborn with his 5 movie limit we can could have The Thing AND The Fly.
