Let's just compromise and put Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in there. It was important because it was the final nail in the coffin for Lucas (unless you count Red Tails).

I get what you're saying, but wouldn't "The Blair Witch Project" be more responsible for that? And I totally agree about "The Wrestler", not just a really strong film but also one that's accessible for pretty much anyone. Blair Witch certainly had an impact, but found footage didn't take off as a subgenre until the late 2000s due in large part to Cloverfield.

Cloverfield is a Godzilla knock off. Blair Witch and Paranormal are the templates for the genre.

We're having enough trouble coming up with a fifth movie, let's not go back to debating the fourth...

Blue Velvet
Aliens
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Down by Law
The Sacrifice
Good year though, tough to leave some off like Sid and Nancy and Hannah and her Sisters and Stand by Me. This should be another good debate.

1. Aliens: Modern gaming would be vastly different without this film.
2. Platoon: One of the definitive war films and an instant classic.
3. The Fly: Ground breaking make-up effects and the depiction of a body slowly mutating has been echoed since. District 9 comes to mind in this regard. The line "Be afraid...be very afraid" has also lasted in pop-culture. On other note, the film is a rare meeting of mainstream cinema and high art.
4. Blue Velvet: After the failure of Dune, this brought Lynch back to his surrealist self and the film has become one of the most praised mystery films of all-time. It's also a clear precursor to Lynch's subsequent, and highly praised, Twin Peaks and Mulholland Drive.
5. Ferris Bueller's Day Off: I don't find this very impressive as a film, but it's pop-cultural impact across the board is hard to deny.
Honourable Mentions:
Hannah and Her Sisters and Stand By Me: Both great films, but they don't quite have the legacy to make the cut.
Top Gun: It's made an impact on pop-culture, but more in an ironic, joking way. Half the people referencing the film probably haven't seen it.
Manhunter: First appearance of everyone's favourite cannibal.
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home: More important for Trek fans than the wider film community.

Platoon: No brainer Aliens: No brainer Blue Velvet: No brainer A Better Tomorrow: The movie that united John Woo and Chow Yun Fatt for the purposes of maximum gun violence. Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer: A touchstone for down and dirty violence.

Regarding some recent nominations...
Down by Law and The Sacrifice: Are either of these movies truly important? I know critics and cinephiles endorse them, but I cant see any real impact or influence they may have had.
Big Trouble in Little China: Similar to the last two. The film may have a cult following, but their legacy seems fairly small in the grand scheme of things. Carpenter has made much more important film.
Top Gun: I don't really see how this is important. It's pop-culture status is mostly a joke as the film is pretty much a relic of the 80s. The only argument I can see for it's case being it's effect on military recruitment in the 1980s, but even that seems something limited to time.
A Better Tomorrow: I don't know, I feel like Hard Boiled is a good enough representation of the Woo/Fat action collaborations.
Anyway, not trying to step on anyone's choices, just thought I'd toss out some opposing views and maybe stir some debate.

Maybe "The Sacrifice" isn't important, but it's a great film. I'm not too worried about it not making it though. "Down by Law" however is in line with "Stranger than Paradise" as being highly influential to introducing (well, maybe more being the first popular success) American audiences to the independent film movement that we see today. Sure, you can argue "The Graduate" did that years ago, but pretty much every indie flick today has drawn on the success and influence of those two films in some way.
I mean, I could say the same for "Platoon". It's a good war movie, but not a great one. Does it have more impact than "Full Metal Jacket" or "Apocalypse Now"? Probably not, and it's certainly not on their level either. But I definitely understand why people are voting for it, it's one of the better films of 1986.

We have that film listed already for similar reasons. Still, I get your argument. I feel like Platoon was pretty much universally declared a classic on release and is often considered one of the best films ever by both film buffs and more casual film-goers. A lot of it's scenes have become referenced and spoofed since, and I suspect many directors who've made war films since I've looked to Platoon for inspiration.

I'd be totally fine with "My Dinner with Andre", but yeah, I get where you're coming from as well.
I don't deny "Platoon" is well received and influential, but I think it's a second-tier war film and doesn't stack up to the ones I mentioned. We've omitted other films on here for the reason that we have better representations already, and if we already have "Apocalypse Now" and "Full Metal Jacket" instead I feel like those are better representations and more important films because they dig a lot deeper into the psychology of warfare than "Platoon" does.

You a raise a good point, especially considering all three films depict the same war. We also have The Deer Hunter as well. However I think having them all emphasizes how stylistically different all of the major Vietnam films released in that time frame were.

That is true, they're all very different from one another. I'm not against "Platoon" being on here, I just wanted to debate film.

No love for Hoosiers? Probably our best opportunity for a sports movie, and it's consistently ranked as one of the best sports movies of all time.
