I think you're all being too quick to dismiss The Fly's importance. Regardless, if IanTheCool wasn't stubborn with his 5 movie limit we can could have The Thing AND The Fly. And Gran Torino

I'd put in Hoosiers for my choice, but if that doesn't get support, I'd throw my vote behind The Fly

Yeah, "The Fly" gets my vote as well, it's just a much better movie.

Well, The Fly DOES kick ass. It's just not "important". But that difference never really mattered here.

If Neverending's years turned out the same as the re-imagined Oscar picks, I'd be bitching at that list all day. I'm totally fine with "The Fly" making it, it's a really good movie and Cooper's lobbying harder for it than Rob Ford for crack.

Social Network and Inception are the first I think of.

Inception - No explanation needed
Kick-Ass - A superhero flick that was dark and funny, actually felt like a comic book. Watchmen (2009) may have been dark but it just felt like a drama. I think this one felt like the source material more and did a better job. Watchmen was the better film of the two but this one just did the comic book thing better.
The Expendables - Yea, not a piece of art but having all those guys in one film deserves the nod to be on this list. It was awesome to see them all together, something you talked about as a kid if you grew up in the 80s and 90s finally happening.
The Social Network - No explanation
My 5th would have to be one of the ones below but not sure which
The Town The Fighter True Grit
All great films, all have valid reasons to be on the list but I can't make a decision for one over the other.

Inception The Social Network Four Lions - ballsy Jihadi humor, a great dark comedy. Toy Story 3 The Fighter

1. Inception: Easily the most talked about film of the year. This still comes up often in my film classes.
2. The Social Network: The most well-reviewed film of the year. Feels like a very modern example of our time.
3. Toy Story 3: The Toy Story movies were a huge deal for the children of my generation and this highly emotional ending was a big deal.
4. Black Swan: Another one of those interesting films that's highly artistic while still having mass appeal. Beyond that, I suspect this film will be an influence on future filmmakers.
5. The Fighter: Alright, I got that this isn't anything special cinematically, but the huge comeback this was for David O. Russell. It was a huge hit critically and financially, and O. Russell's follow-ups have been even better and more successful. I also think Russell is an important filmmaker and this is the best chance he has of making the list.
Honourable Mentions
Alice in Wonderland: Made a ton of money and has inspired some similarly themed fairy tale remakes, but I don't know if that's really that notable a legacy. Remakes were common before this film, all it did was prove to Hollywood a very specific type of film could be remade for easy money.
127 Hours, Shutter Island, and True Grit: Awesome movies, but not important ones.

I couldn't go for Toy Story 3. I thought about it being on the list, good film and all, but what made it stand out against the previous films or any other Pixar/Disney animated film?
