Gran Torino was super cliche and its success was mostly due to it being a January release. Racist.

There's no way Gran Torino should be on this list.

This thread is full of Hmong racists and anti-old people.

There's no way Gran Torino should be on this list. I would rather have Cloverfield than Gran Torino.

It will get hate because it is a religious flick but it should be on the list.

Still can't deny it being the biggest independent film of 2008, making back 66x its budget.

Well it was the biggest hit but Flywheel started Sherwood's movie making days. That led to Facing the Giants which led to Fireproof.

Well it was the biggest hit but Flywheel started Sherwood's movie making days. That led to Facing the Giants which led to Fireproof. According to Google, Flywheel predates The Passion and only made $37,000. And, Facing the Giants was released two years after The Passion and made $10.2 million. I'm pretty sure no one outside of Georgia saw Flywheel so these people benefited from Mel Gibson's success.

Or maybe Mel Gibson benefited from their success? He saw Flywheel and a realized the market was there and the rest is history. Either way, I stand by Fireproof being on the list.

Milk: the event was important, not necessarily the film. NE is right, the documentary was far more important. Defienace, no one remember s it. Had almost no impact. Boyu in Pajamas: you are explaining why it is a good film, not why it is an important film. Milk - But for those who don't watch documentaries it can be said to be just as important (Bonnie and Clyde good film, but there's a documentary on it The Elephant Man good film, but there's a documentary on it Malcom X good film, but there's a documentary on it Schindler's List good film, but there's a documentary on it Munich good film, but there's a documentary on it Zero Dark 30 yadda, yadda, yadda,....) Defiance I see what you're saying, but I guess it's because I also red the book that I was impressed. Boy - because it shows what a fine line there is between humanity and barbarity and the potential of the consequences of doing the wrong thing

No shit, but guess what? The Harvey Milk documentary actually made an impression upon the film community and constantly comes up on lists of the best documentaries made. In other words, importance. That's why its different. All the movie did was be an acting vehicle for Sean Penn. It didn't make a big impression. In every other case you listed, the movie was the one that had importance, not any corresponding docs. With Milk its the other way around.

Well, the Milk doc made an impression because it told Harvey Milk's story early and it told it well, but like the Gus Van Sant movie it was kind of a by the numbers production with talking heads and whatnot, there isn't really much to set it apart cinematically.

the Milk doc made an impression because it told Harvey Milk's story early That's the argument here. Milk came too late in the game to make an impact. Just like Dallas Buyers Club will never have the same influence as Philadelphia.

It's a good movie, I'll give it the edge over "Milk" or "Slumdog Millionaire".

I am not understanding this.... Remember, this isn't "good" movies. It might be easier if when you list the year if you also list the movies you have no intention of adding to the list.
