Apocalypse Now - Duh
Stalker - Also duh
Alien - Awesome, still as incredible as it was when it released
Manhattan - Regarded as Allen's best other than 'Annie Hall'
Monty Python's The Life of Brian - Always entertaining, ahead of its time

Is Caligari 1920 or 1919? I've seen it listed under both. If so, I'm going with Drac's choices as well, those are the only ones that come to mind though I'm going to swap out Within Our Gates for the Phantom Carriage.

Dammit, I retract my statement. And yes, you are correct, it's 1921.

That's awesome, I was planning on going through the ones I haven't seen year-by-year. Reviewing the list so far, I think we've done a good job and we have some fun selections.

The only choice that really sticks out to me is 300 for 2007. I get why it's there, but still.

Yeah, I like "300" to the extent that it's fun and visually is appealing, but important? Not at all, especially in a year as strong as 2007.

There's plenty I would change, but 300 is the only really glaring flaw.

I think its a good choice. I think it started off the testosterone filled "cool" movie era.

1. Vertigo: A masterpiece from Hitch and in his top three.
2. The Hidden Fortress: At the time of release, this was Kurosawa's most successful film and has had a direct influence on Star Wars.
3. Horror of Dracula: Launched the hammer horror film series which revived the classic movie monsters with much more blood and sex. Christopher Lee's performance is one of his most famous, and he brings a memorable take to the titular vampire.
4. Elevator to the Gallows: Seen as a pioneer in European Art Cinema.
5. Touch of Evil: One of the last examples of classic film noir and it's visual style has been emulated/parodied since.
Honourable mentions:
The Defiant Ones: This hurts to cut. This is a great example of Stanley Kramer and Hollywood's socially conscious dramas of the 1950s and was the first time a black man was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar, but cinematically, the five listed do more.
Mon Oncle: Jacques Tati is an acclaimed filmmaker and this effort won the Foreign Film Oscar. However I don't know if it's had any more of an impact than Tati's other films.
The Blob and The Fly: Iconic B-horror films.
Ashes and Diamonds: Critically acclaimed and a favourite of Scorsese.

Horror of Dracula: Launched the hammer horror film series. The first Hammer movie is The Curse of Frankenstein. You can exclude Dracula for something else unless we fucked up and didn't include Frankenstein - which is possible considering the track record here.

Well, Horror seems the most important of the Hammer movies. And no, we didn't include The Curse of Frankenstein. 1957 was tight.

In that case, we gotta have a Hammer movie in here. There's also The Mummy in 1959.

That's cause it's the only choice left. Even with that removed, I'd still opt for Dracula over the other two.
