I think Bridge on the River Kwai is an absolute must. It's one of the most famous films ever and widely considered a masterpiece.

Trust me, I love that film and I'm a huge fan of David Lean, but after going back and forth I think the other films brought more advancements or influences overall. I'd say it's a better film overall than say, "12 Angry Men", but in terms of overall importance I'm not so sure. It's certainly the best of the '50s epics and set the stage for Lean to come out with "Lawrence of Arabia" 5 years later, so you can make a great argument either way. Like I said, this is probably the toughest year I've weighed in on, I left out films that absolute landmarks of cinema, and I feel dirty doing it.

It is a very tough year and I also get why you wouldn't drop 12 Angry Men for this year, as it is essential. For me, the essentials for 57 (as far as importance is concerned anyway) are Bridge, 12 Angry Men, and Seventh Seal.

Yeah, it's tough, I mean we literally are comparing classics to classics, so the more opinions we get on this year the better. Hopefully a lot of people chime in because this is a good debate.

Yeah, its tough. 7th seal for sure, and 12 angry men. Bridge is the tough one, but I'd like to see it in.

IMDB has Elevator to the Gallows as being 1958. Crap, replace it with Sweet Smell However I applaud you for including Bridge. Who in their right mind wouldn't?

I've thought about it some more, and I'm going to switch "Paths of Glory" out for "The Bridge on the River Kwai", it's a slightly better film and I think carries a stronger anti-war message overall, plus features the iconic whistling sequence.
So my new list will be: The Bridge on the River Kwai 12 Angry Men Wild Strawberries The Seventh Seal Sweet Smell of Success
But this year is still tough as hell to settle on!

What is sweet smell of success, and why is it more important that paths of glory?

What is sweet smell of success, and why is it more important that paths of glory? It's an extremely well-written semi-film noir about a ruthless Broadway critic. It's easily one of the best screenplays of all time and the cinematography is staggering in depicting a very shadowy portrait of 1950s New York and specifically Broadway. And Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis are excellent. The story heats up when Curtis starts to get involved with Lancaster's sister. Excellent movie. It's apples to oranges between that and "Paths of Glory", but I think in this case "Sweet Smell of Success" should be on here because it has more to fall back on. Plus, Kubrick will have plenty on here if he doesn't already (he should anyways, "Barry Lyndon" all the way!) so unfortunately I'm going to have it off my list.

Okay, so I now understand why you personally think its great. But does taht extend to a notable place in film history? I mean, it might, i'm just wondering.

Well, yeah, that's my personal opinion but it's ranked on Time's Top 100 films (it should be on AFI's list, no idea why it isn't) and on the Top 1,000 list of They Shoot Pictures Don't They it's ranked 184. On that same list "Paths of Glory" is at 206. I just recently watched the film, but I've been well aware of it being one of the best American films ever and easily one of the best of the decade.

I'm still sticking with Paths of Glory, but if I have to drop something from my list that's what I would drop, and Sweet Smell seems a good choice.

1. Apocalypse Now: A totally unique masterpiece.
2. Alien: One of the most iconic creature designs in film and a major title for both Horror and Science-Fiction.
3. Manhattan: One of Woody Allen's undisputed classics with some iconic Gordon Willis cinematography.
4. Monty Python's Life of Brian: I'd argue this is the best of the Python films. More importantly it's religious satire is really bold and still rings true.
5. Kramer vs. Kramer: Captures the shift away from traditional parental roles occurring at the time and it's portrait of divorce and the effect on children is still very relevant.
Honourable Mentions:
Mad Max: Certainly important, but The Road Warrior is the real game changer of the series and we have that already.
The Warriors: "Come out and playyyyy."
Nosferatu: Seems a more artistic and thoughtful remake.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture: Brought Trek back but, comparable to Mad Max, it's the sequel that really matters.
