Vertigo and touch of evil for sure. I would also go with Hidden Fortress as it sort of brought that high adventure back into epics like this.

I still need to see "The Hidden Fortress". Same. It's probably my most glaring Kurosawa omission.

And "Kagemusha" for me as well, yikes. I try to see every movie in the world, but there's this damn thing called time standing in the way.

Kagemusha is very good, sort of a dry-run for Ran.

1. Vertigo: A masterpiece from Hitch and in his top three. 2. The Hidden Fortress: At the time of release, this was Kurosawa's most successful film and has had a direct influence on Star Wars. 3. Horror of Dracula: Launched the hammer horror film series which revived the classic movie monsters with much more blood and sex. Christopher Lee's performance is one of his most famous, and he brings a memorable take to the titular vampire. 4. Elevator to the Gallows: Seen as a pioneer in European Art Cinema. 5. Touch of Evil: One of the last examples of classic film noir and it's visual style has been emulated/parodied since. Honourable mentions:The Defiant Ones: This hurts to cut. This is a great example of Stanley Kramer and Hollywood's socially conscious dramas of the 1950s and was the first time a black man was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar, but cinematically, the five listed do more. Mon Oncle: Jacques Tati is an acclaimed filmmaker and this effort won the Foreign Film Oscar. However I don't know if it's had any more of an impact than Tati's other films. The Blob and The Fly: Iconic B-horror films. Ashes and Diamonds: Critically acclaimed and a favourite of Scorsese. I think we go with PGs choices.

1. Safety Last!: Harold Lloyd's most iconic film, and for good reason. The tower scene alone warrants inclusion.
2. The Ten Commandments: A big hit back in the day which was a very large production for it's time complete with early colour use.
3. The Hunchback of Notre Dame: Made Lon Chaney a star and this is generally a pioneering early horror release.
4. La Roue: Film from Abel Gance (whose Napoleon we have listed) which allegedly features revolutionary lighting and cutting.
5. A Woman of Paris: An atypical Chaplin film praised for it's character complexity. Michael Powell has spoken openly of the film's influence on him.

1. Saftey Last!: Gave us one of the most iconic images of the silent era. Also, it's awesome.
2. Our Hospitality: Buster Keaton's first feature length masterpiece.
3. La Roue: Haven't seen it, but it's reputation is really strong.
4. A Woman in Paris: I think it's really boring, but for whatever reason it seems to have had a major influence of a certain generation of director. Coop mentioned its influence on Powell but it also apparently sparked an epiphany for Ernst lubitsch.
5. Souls for Sale: One of the first movies about Hollywood. You won't see it covered in most older film texts because it was lost for decades, but it has recently been rediscovered and is getting heavily discussed because of it.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame - Lon Chaney the man of 1000 faces
Safety Last! - Harold Lloyd genius - this has one of the most iconic images of the silent era (Loyd hanging from the clock tower)
The Balloonatic - One of Keaton's last short films
The Ten Commandments - tiny but epic for silent screen
Our Hospitality - full length Keaton
