It's an interesting and important work, but I don't think we should just change the rules to include documentaries after we've previously deemed them ineligible. Well... in that case... you have my support, thebtskink . Who's on first? Classic comedy.

Children of Paradise - Masterpiece, one of the best films ever made and one of the most impressive productions. Rome Open City - One of the best neo-realist films and also highly entertaining and interesting. Brief Encounter - David Lean at his best. Spellbound - Very good Hitchcock. The Lost Weekend - Not a great film, but one of the better Best Picture winners from the '40s.

If it is bug's bunny, then I commend Thebstick for his unorthodox picks.
Its looking like: Rome, Open City Brief Encounter Lost Weekend Children of Paradise Mildred Pierce
Next year: 1994 One of the biggest years in the history of film!

I don't think Forrest Gump is important.
Pulp Fiction started the trend for a certain kind of movie.
Clerks inspired every independent filmmaker. If Kevin Smith can make it, so can we.
Also...
Are we gonna overlook Jim Carrey's accomplishment? That was HIS year. Ace Ventura. The Mask. Dumb & Dumber. I can't think of another actor who made three beloved movies in one year.

No one cares about Ace Ventura or The Mask anymore. Dumb and Dumber is maybe a little closer, but even it isn't exactly going to stand the test of time.

1. Pulp Fiction: Inspired a whole new wave of filmmakers and is still highly iconic.
2. The Shawshank Redemption: The most beloved film of the last 25 years? It might be.
3. The Lion King: The last major work of the Disney Renaissance. A massive hit commercially, critically, and culturally.
4. Clerks: Proved that theoretically anyone could make a film and the profane dialogue may have been an inspiration on the Apatow brand of humour the following decade.
5. Natural Born Killers: Thought provoking, controversial, and fiercely debated. A film that explores societal problems while at the same time blamed for encouraging them. It's also one of the last mainstream American films I can think of that really pushed boundaries and offended people.
Honourable Mentions:
Chunking Express: I feel like I can be swayed to this movie's side, I just don't know enough about it to support it now.
The Jim Carrey Trifecta: Dumb and Dumber, The Mask, and Ace Ventura: All very fun films and Carrey certainly had a stellar year, but none of these films really hold up nor can they be said to have had any real influence. Honestly if any Carrey movie is worth considering, it's probably The Cable Guy when we get to 96.
Leon, Ed Wood, and The Crow: Three movies I really love, but none of them are important.

Pulp Fiction - Well, duh. Hoop Dreams - One of the best documentaries ever, the film goes way beyond basketball and has profound examples of the struggle for inner city youth and the big issues of privatized institutions. Incredible. The Shawshank Redemption - Everyone's favorite child. Forrest Gump - Never understood hate for the film, it's a wildly fun narrative that features excellent performances. Plus it inspired everyone's favorite over-priced seafood chain, yippee! (I nail the trivia every time, muhahaha) Chungking Express - Excellent, was one of the cornerstones of Chinese cinema that began its prominence here in the late '80s.

Chungking was a big part of Wong Kar-wai's success. It's considered to be his first real achievement (As Tears Go By and Days of Being Wild are both good, but relatively minor). Also, Sight and Sound included it as one of the best films of the past 25 years.

Forrest Gump has been much more of a mainstay than something like Natural Born Killers.

As a person who hates Forrest Gump with every fiber of his being, you're unfortunately right.
