Forrest Gump has been much more of a mainstay than something like Natural Born Killers. But that could be because it's a feel good audience pleaser put out by a major studio starring the most likeable actor in Hollywood. Natural Born Killers, by it's very design, is not a movie that will resonate with mainstream audiences. |

1. Jurassic Park: Ground breaking visual effects and a film that touched the imagination of pretty much every kid who saw it.
2. Schindler's List: A modern classic which is often cited as the definitive Holocaust film.
3. Three Colors Blue: The film that started the "Three Colors" trilogy and still possibly the most acclaimed of the series. This series needs a representation in the list and this should be it.
4. Groundhog Day: Ripped off endlessly by T.V. shows since, and a film that has inspired a passionate fan base.
5. Philadelphia: A pretty substantial breakthrough for homosexual depictions in mainstream media.
Honourable Mentions:
Menace II Society: An important film from the New Black Cinema, but I think Boyz N the Hood would probably be more essential.
The Nightmare Before Christmas: It definitely had an influence over a few niche films and it does have a fan base, but I don't think its importance really compares to the five films I listed.
Carlito's Way and The Remains of the Day: Two great movies, but two ultimately unimportant ones.

I think Nightmare Before Christmas had a big footprint on the burtonesque, aesthetic, no?
Also, Jurassic Park - One of the most influential in that last 20 or 30 years for sure

Yeah, I like both films on about the same level (though "Menace II Society" gets better on repeat viewings while "Boyz N the Hood" isn't as good in that respect) but "Boyz N the Hood" is probably the more "important" film because it garnered more attention, and also came first. Oh John Singleton, why did you become such a shitty filmmaker, why?
