Blade Runner: no brainer Fanny and Alexander: Bergman's magnificent swan song Gandhi: The standard by which epic Hollywood Oscar-bait biopics are judged Fitzcarraldo: About time we got some Herzog in this Tron: Definitely some inovative special effects

It takes a lot of balls not to include E.T. and The Thing.

It takes a lot of balls not to include E.T. and The Thing. The Thing has some very cool practical creature effects, but you can see similarly strong effects in other movies and it's otherwise of a formula with other movies like Alien. As for ET... I've never seen the appeal.

Now if Bergman had only made ET an art-house classic with Liv Ullmann as the alien. By the way, why is Fanny and Alexander here? I like it, but it's not exactly a popular film outside specific circles. How is that more "important" than ET, which has been copied numerous times? I mean, it would be there if we were voting the best movies, but we're not. ET even has an iconic image that has been duplicated a hundred times over. Just take a look at the Wiki page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E.T._the_Extra-Terrestrial

I'm not dismissing it. I'm just asking a question. Blade Runner, Tron, and Gandhi are obvious. Fitzcarraldo is a movie I love and would like to see included, but I'm struggling to find reasons to justify it.

Blade Runner - No explanation necessary.
Fanny and Alexander - Beautiful and profound, it isn't Bergman's swan song, but it is a summation of his career and life. A knockout.
E.T. - One of the few great "family" films ever made.
The Thing - Badass and bleak and in my opinion Carpenter's best work.
Fitzcarraldo - Another example of Herzog in top form. Beautifully shot and always a joy to watch.

Let's not forget 48 HRS. It is generally considered to be the first buddy cop movie. Eddie Murphy doesn't actually play a cop in the movie, and he's definitely not "buddies" with Nick Nolte, but it created the formula that would be used in buddy cop movies. Opposite personalities as the heroes. They hate each other at first, but then learn to tolerate each other. One is serious and the other is a loose canon. Combining darkness and violence with comedy. Opening the movie with a pop song. It's all there.

Fitzcarraldo is a movie I love and would like to see included, but I'm struggling to find reasons to justify it. The documentary about Fitzcarraldo is more important than the movie itself. But Ian doesn't want us including documentaries.

E.T. is one of the biggest movies of all time, its gotta be here.
I love the Thing, but I'm not sure. We tend to lean a lot to horror while neglecting things like comedy or family. So maybe we need to consider 48 hours.

Never seen "48 Hours", but there's no way in hell that deserves to be on there over "The Thing", no effing way.

The Thing's set-up has been replicated many times (especially on episodes of The X-Files). It's also inspired multiple pieces of media, as well, including a video game, a prequel, and several novelizations. Let's also not forget how influential and groundbreaking the visual effects were--everyone remembers the alien-dog.

Blade Runner: Because fucking Blade Runner.
Gandhi: As mentioned, set the Oscar bait bar.
The Dark Crystal: Wild Card, significant in the cinematic art of puppetry animatronics and expanded the visibility and influence of Brian Froud and his aesthetic into fanasty film.
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan: Changed the Star Trek franchise from cinematic footnote to a scifi-supercult and helped birthed a fan base that thrives to this day.
ET: Staple of childhood and family films
Others: Secret of Nimh: Don Bluth's debut and the beginning of the only other animation power house to rival Disney through the 80's and 90's.

1982 was a good year, no doubting that. This is not nearly as clear-cut as some of the other years have been.

"Conan the Barbarian" is a fun movie and leagues better than probably any other swords-and-sandals fantasy flick in the '80s, but one of the top 5 or most important films of the year? Nah.

1. Blade Runner: Without a doubt. Massively influential in science-fiction cinema.
2. E.T. the Extra Terrestrial: One of the most famous films of all time and a big influence on Mac and Me.
3. Gandhi: Set the framework for how to make a historical biopic.
4. 48 Hrs.: A pioneer in the buddy cop sub genre. I think this also deserves credit for kicking off Eddie Murphy's movie success. And while he did have bigger movies, this might actually be his best.
5. Tron: A breakthrough for visual effects and computer graphics. John Lasseter has also cited the film as a major influence.
Honourable Mentions:
The Thing: An awesome and popular movie with some really cool special effects, but this is still essentially playing in the same box as Alien and Howard Hawks' original. It's close to being in, but this is a tight year.
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan: I was really hoping this could make it as it's the only Trek film that is really worthy of considering, but it's importance is mostly confined to the series which spawned it.
Poltergeist: It's a very popular film, but I'm not sure how much new ideas it brought to the table.
Fanny and Alexander: It's the final film from one of the most important filmmakers of all time and is widely considered a masterpiece, but it also has a fairly limited appeal.
Fitzcarraldo: Kind of in the same boat as Fanny and Alexander. This is a really well-regarded film, but only in really devoted cinematic circles.
