For the record, mine will be: Oldboy Lost in Translation The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl ...and Mystic River, I guess? I can dig it.

And for the record, I was kidding when I said "The Room." For the record, I wasn't.

I guess The Room is important. It's the modern day Plan 9 From Outer Space. But I feel like everyone that's into it is laughing at it unintentionally. What does the filmmaker think about that? It shouldn't go in if it's nothing more that a joke to the people that worship it.

It shouldn't go in if it's nothing more that a joke to the people that worship it. Tommy Wiseau now claims it was intentionally bad, something the cast and crew have refuted. And I agree with your assessment that a film viewed as a joke should not make it.

Do we buy that, that it was all intentional? I don't think so.
It's a freak of nature.

I guess The Room is important. It's the modern day Plan 9 From Outer Space. Plan 9 didn't make it in when we were doing that year, I feel The Room deserves the same fate.

Wiseau also wants a 3-D version.

I think we are set with: Lord of the Rings: Return of the King Mystic Bloody River Lost in Translation Oldboy Pirates of the Caribbean
I'm surprised no one chose Kill Bill.
Next year:1960

Breathless L'avventura La Dolce Vita Psycho The Apartment That's exactly the list I'm going with, I don't think a case can really be made for anything but this list exactly.

1. Psycho: Without a doubt one of the most important films of all time.
2. The Apartment: The ultimate romantic comedy.
3. La Dolce Vita: Celebrated as a masterpiece and very influential. One of Fellini's most praised works.
4. Breathless: One of the "big three" films of the French New Wave and Goddard's most famous film.
5. L'Avventura: Regarded as widely influential, a heavily debated work of cinema, and the film that put Antonioni on the map.
Honourable Mentions:
Spartacus: An enjoyable film with a definite pop culture legacy, but it's mostly just another Hollywood epic and not very reflective of Kubrick's body of work.
Peeping Tom: From what I hear, this is a pretty influential horror film, but this year is pretty stacked.
The Virgin Spring: Pretty bold for its time, but this doesn't seem like one of Bergman's most important efforts.
