You guys can vote for snob movies if you want, but deep down, you know these are the real iconic and influential movies of 1953.

I'm going to fight for Ugetsu. Kenji Mizoguchi is an important filmmaker and in 1950 the film was almost as important as Rashomon in getting Japanese cinema popular in the west. Martin Scorsese has cited it as one of his favorites and it showed up on the prestigious Sight and Sound list twice. It's one of the staples of the golden age of world cinema.

You have my support for Ugetsu. As for the others: Tokyo Story, War of the Worlds, and Wages of Fear.

That's tough to choose between Earrings and Ugetsu, but I'll go with Ugetsu.

1. It's a Wonderful Life: Probably among the most famous films ever made.
2. Notorious: Classic Hitchcock. Among the master's most revered and studied films.
3. The Big Sleep: Hugely influential, and also a good representation of the Bogart/Bacall collaborations.
4. The Best Years of Our Lives: It takes balls to tackle the issue of returning veterans so quickly after World War Two.
5. A Matter of Life and Death: Very well known Powell/Pressburger film that seems to have a decent pop culture legacy.
Honourable mentions:
Beauty and the Beast: This is a highly praised foreign film, but I'm unsure of how important it actually is.
Great Expectations: Very enjoyable David Lean movie, but Brief Encounter is probably the more important of his early work.
The Postman Always Rings Twice: Well-known noir, but it does little that Double Indemnity didn't also do.

I haven't even see it but I'll say it: Song of the South.
Also, Beauty and the Beast, unless you want to count it as 1947.

Beauty and the Beast - My favorite Cocteau film, it's an incredible blend of classic storytelling and amazing effects and set design, especially for its time. Has been imitated but never equaled for decades.
Notorious - Great Hitchcock, one of his best and perhaps his best from the 40s.
The Big Sleep - THE noir of the 40s (that's right "Maltese Falcon", BOOM!) where you don't really know what's going on or particularly care. Howard Hawks at his best, I love this film and pick up something with each viewing.
It's a Wonderful Life - My favorite Capra film, it has all of his signature sentimentality but with a little something extra. A Capra film you only roll your eyes a couple times at, which is impressive.
Great Expectations - David Lean is the greatest British filmmaker ever, and his adaptation of Dickens' classic novel is one of his best. True to the source and filled with excellent imagery (the trees violently blowing in the wind has been mimicked so many times) and performances, this is a great film by the autuer of England.

I'll second that I'll third, though maybe beauty and the beast instead of life and death.

Honestly I think A Matter of Life and Death should be in there more than Beauty and the Beast, but Powell and Pressburger will definitely make it eventually, whereas this might be Cocteau's only chance.
