Are there any 1935 or 1937 films we are holding back for this round?

So far The Last Picture Show has eluded me. The library, netflix, and TCM of all failed to fix this for me. The Last Picture Show was a common "late night movie" on HBO. Dracula's description is VERY misleading. It's a teen sex drama. The whole movie is just Jeff Bridges and other people trying to lose their virginity. It's American Pie, but in black & white. You're 21? You're too old for the movie. You should have watched it when you were 13.

I have the weirdest boner right now. There's a scene where a retarded kid has sex with a prostitute. I think you'll like it.

The Other Sister is probably the pinnacle of what will be achieved in normalizing sexual relationships amongst mentally handicapped persons.
That's incredibly sad.

Modern Times - The best of Chaplin's work, an extraordinary achievement of satire and physical comedy and a beautiful good-bye to the silent era that made Chaplin a star as the talkie era was in full swing. Brilliant.
My Man Godfrey - This one surprised me. It's a Criterion release, and I saw why quickly into the film. Has a nice theme of class differences interlaced with some genuinely funny performances. Very solid.
Swing Time - I don't nominate movies I haven't seen, but I haven't seen this one. 1936 doesn't have a ton of firepower, and this is supposed to be the best of the Astaire/Rogers films (I've only seen "Top Hat") and is on the AFI Top 100 (or was, can't remember if it's on the current or 1998 list) so probably should be included.
That's really all I've got, 1936 was kind of a dull year even on the international front. "The Great Ziegfeld" won Best Picture, and it's very mediocre and forgettable and overly long, so no way. Idk, those are the only ones I can see being set.

I would choose: Modern Times Mr. Deeds Swing Time Flash Gordon Things to Come
So Modern Times and My Man Godfrey are the front rummer, with Mr. Deeds and Swing Time close behind. Any more word on a fifth? Reefer Madness is looking to be the choice right now.

Reefer Madness? Really? No one legitimately likes that movie, it's a retroactive joke and a minor footnote, nothing more.

I'd be okay with San Francisco, but in terms of famous bad movies, Reefer Madness is probably the closest one will come to making the list.

"Reefer Madness" is an awful piece of cinema, which is also what makes it a hilarious viewing. Leave it to a church group from the 30s to come up with ridiculous assumptions about marijuana and an absurd depiction of people who are high. It's kinda like "Birth of a Nation", the content is deplorable but it's a viewing experience unlike any other. Ok, that might be a stretch, but you get the idea.

1. Tokyo Story: Ozu's most acclaimed and famous film. In all honesty, I don't get the hype, but this film is a big deal.
2. Ugestu: Acclaimed example of Japanese cinema and, along with Rashomon, is seen as bringing Japanese cinema to a Western audience. I haven't actually seen it, but I won't argue it's reputation.
3. The Wages of Fear: I haven't seen this either, but once again this film has a tremendous reputation and seems to have influenced a lot of thrillers subsequently.
4. The Earrings of Madame de...: Influenced Stanley Kubrick and Paul Thomas Anderson.
5. Shane: An important Western which could be seen as an early revisionist take on the genre.
Honourable Mentions
Peter Pan: Famous Disney film, but there will be better examples in other years.
From Here to Eternity: That beach scene is pretty iconic, but does anyone remember anything else that happened in this film?
Stalag 17: I think the film is an important step for Wilder bridging his comedic and dramatic work, but this is not in his top tier.

You guys need to stop masturbating to the Criterion Collection. This is why the old CS! got shut down.
The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms - Ray Harryhausen and Ray Bradbury. Nuff said. Don't even argue against this. You'll sound like an idiot.
From Here to Eternity - One of the most beloved movies of the 1950's. The beach kissing scene has been spoofed and referenced so many times that I lost count.
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes - Do I need to explain to you people how iconic this movie is? PG Cooper, are you not a film student? Please tell me they taught you about Marilyn Monroe. Do you know who Marilyn Monroe is? I'll tutor you, man. I want you to be educated.
House of Wax - This is a classic. Vincent Price!
Roman Holiday - Audrey Hepburn!
Shane - Classic western
The War of the Worlds - It's preserved by the U.S. government for being important.
The Wild One - Marlon Brando!!!
Peter Pan - A beloved Disney classic.

You guys need to stop masturbating to the Criterion Collection. This is why the old CS! got shut down. If admiring the Criterion Collection is wrong then I don't wanna be right. This is a pretty good choice. I'll support it. The beach scene is the only famous scene. Hasn't actually come up in my classes, but I'm well aware of the film. Plus my girlfriend is a fan. This is probably worth considering. It introduced Hepburn, but I can't think of anything it did cinematically that would be considered important. I'm with you. I meant to give this an honourable mention. We already have lots of Brando. Disney has a lot of other movies which deserve listing more, and this year has a lot of other films to consider too.

I was half-joking, but if we're gonna be serious... The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms - It was a landmark movie for Ray Harryhausen and a breakout for Ray Bradbury. And it did technically launch the next wave of monster movies, a year before Godzilla. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes - This is an iconic movie for a long list of reasons. Shane - Like PG Cooper said, it's one of the early revisionist westerns. The War of the Worlds - Silly for our standards, but groundbreaking in its day. The Wild One - Like Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, this movie is very iconic and influential. Many things we associate with the 1950's came from The Wild One.. I'm on my phone now, but when I get on a computer, I'll post a picture of Marlon Brandon in his leather jacket and motorcycle and remind you guys WHY it's important and should be on the list.

I do not like "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes", I had to watch it twice in college because my female professors were obsessed with relating it to Laura Mulvey (who is full of shit and can be disproved by numerous films). It's not very good, and the only Howard Hawks film I've seen that I did not like.
Anyways...
Tokyo Story - Ozu's best film, and that's saying something. A family drama that doesn't play out with over the top or sensational performances, but rather keys perfectly on the subtle dysfunction that Japanese families faced after WWII and the modernization the country was undergoing. A masterpiece, one of the 100 best films ever.
Ugetsu - Another 10/10, and in my opinion Mizoguchi's best work, topping even "Sansho the Bailiff" by him. It's sad, very sad, but one of the most brilliantly executed films I've ever seen. The cinematography is flawless, and the characters are mesmerizing to watch in their destructive relationships. Masterpiece.
The Earrings of Madame De... - Well look here, yet another 10/10 and probably the best film of Ophuls' illustrious career. The story is brilliant, and Ophuls' beautiful display of cinematography and fluid tracking shots (and love of mirrors) is on full display here. Paul Thomas Anderson cites this film as a huge influence, and just the tracking shots alone will revert you to "Boogie Nights". Masterpiece.
The Wages of Fear - Not only an excellent story by the master of French suspense, but one of the most influential films of all time. Well acted, gritty, and bleak, this film was way ahead of its time and hasn't lost its luster of the years.
I Vitelloni - This is an earlier Fellini effort and gets lost amidst his more well-known works, but this is the film where he began to display his trademark style. Aimless and hilariously inept characters that don't feel like they belong in society, extravagant sequences of blissful mayhem (the carnival sequence is shot to perfection), and great commentary on the state of youth and their role in post-World War II Europe. This is the film that truly introduced Fellini to the world.
This was a great year, there's a lot of movies that I could've gone with as well. "Mr. Hulot's Holiday" (not as good as his later Hulot episodes but still very funny), "The Big Heat" (Fritz Lang with a very good noir), "Shane" (one of the best westerns), "Summer with Monika" (early Bergman, this film was way, way ahead of its time and was an early glimpse of an auteur rounding into form). 1953 was a great year for film. Even the Best Picture winner, "From Here to Eternity" is a solid film.
