I'm seconding Drac's list. How does Dracula's penis taste in your mouth?

I'm surprised by the lack of love for Sweet Sweetback's Baadassss Song or Harold and Maude. Or Steven Spielberg's Duel. Or even George Lucas' THX, which was a technical achievement in spite of its boring screenplay. But... you know... between Ian's 5 movie rule and Dracula's decision making, there's no room to discuss other movies.

If I thought those would be in, I'd be shouting from the rooftops for Brian's Song and Duel. But I get where you're going.

I'm surprised by the lack of love for Sweet Sweetback's Baadassss Song or Harold and Maude. I considered Harold and Maude but figured it wasn't going to get enough support to bother. As for Sweet Sweetback, well, we already had Shaft in which seemed to do more to make blaxsploitation mainstream and was probably closer to the template that was adopted.

It's full of highly iconic scenes and might be Clint Eastwood's most popular character and the film has been celebrated/parodied a bunch since release. It's depiction of a cop on the edge playing by his own rules inlfuenced subsequent cop movies and Harry's almost fascist style of policing caused some controversy and debate.

The French Connection - One of the top Best Picture winners, the film epitomized the gritty '70s filmmaking that would define the decade as the new Hollywood The Last Picture Show - A beautifully executed good-bye to the cinema of the past packed with excellent performances from its young stars A Clockwork Orange - Do I need to write anything? Harold and Maude - The cult film of the '70s, its influence is still seen in numerous indie-romances today McCabe and Mrs. Miller - I won't say it's underrated because it's very well known and received, but this Altman film doesn't get as much attention as some of his others and this is right up there as one of his top 5 films.

It's depiction of a cop on the edge playing by his own rules inlfuenced subsequent cop movies and Harry's almost fascist style of policing caused some controversy and debate. Dirty Harry was released shortly after the United States' Miranda Law. Basically, it was the first time the U.S. made a strong effort to protect criminals and their rights. A lot of people at the time, mostly older and conservative people, were not a fan of that and Dirty Harry became THE movie about that subject matter. Dirty Harry's quest to find the kidnapped girl "at all costs" created MASSIVE controversy. Dirty Harry is an important movie because it captures a specific time in America history, politics and social issues. Dirty Harry is required viewing for any historian of U.S. history.

I think Harold and Maude and Willy Wonka are both worthy of consideration, but I can't think of what I'd bump for them.

I think Harold and Maude and Willy Wonka are both worthy of consideration, but I can't think of what I'd bump for them. Willy Wonka is infinitely more "important" than The Last Picture Show. Willy Wonka is one of the most iconic movies of the 20th century. It has been referenced/parodied thousands, if not, millions of times. There's even a real-life candy company named after Willy Wonka.

For pop culture, yes. But in terms of film comparison, there is no comparison. "Last Picture Show" is really good.

For pop culture, yes. But in terms of film comparison, there is no comparison. "Last Picture Show" is really good. The Last Picture Show is a good movie, but it's also one of those movies that is beginning to be forgotten. Cinema is still relatively young, but it's starting to age. We are already 15 years into the 21 century. Movies from the 20th century are beginning to fade away to make room for other stuff. The Last Picture Show isn't as important as it used to be. Newer generations don't really care about that movie. And no, PG Cooper, despite his youth, is not an accurate representation of his generation. We make jokes about him being young, but in truth, he's an outsider among his people. So, I think we should give Willy Wonka credit for being embraced by every new generation. It's the only live-action kids movie from the 1970's that has any legs. No one cares about the original Freaky Friday. No one cares about Pete's Dragon. No one under 20 even knows that Kurt Russell used to be a Disney star. But Willy Wonka is still VERY relevant.

I would choose: Shaft Sweet sweetbacks bad ass song french connection clockwork and... i'll throw wonka a bone, since i think we have a tendency to want to neglect the important family films.

Modern Times: Chaplin's crowning achievment My Man Godfrey: Popular screwball comedy Sabotage: Another step in Hitchcock's evolution San Francisco: One of the first disaster movies and one of the first effects extravaganzas, kind of a template for something like Titanic Mr. Deeds Goes to Town: Popular Capera movie

1. Modern Times: Chaplin's masterpiece.
2. Swing Time: I know we already have one Astaire/Rogers musical number, but they were a pretty big deal and this was the other major one.
3. My Man Godfrey: One of the more well-known films of the era.
4. Mr. Deeds Goes to Town: Amongst Capra's most famous works.
5. Reefer Madness: Famous cult film that still has an audience.
It's funny, I was just going to change my vote from The Last Picture Show to Willy Wonka, oh well.

What about Swing Time? Or H.G. Welles' Things To Come? Things to Come is a neat little curio, but I don't think it really mattered that much in the grand scheme of things and there's probably a reason why there were barely any science fiction movies in the next 15 years. As for Swing Time, remember we already have Top Hat in, I'd say we have our Astaire/Rogers base covered. It's funny, I was just going to change my vote from The Last Picture Show to Willy Wonka, oh well. I probably would have caved on that eventually as well, but now I get my way!

I'd have actually seen all five had Willy Wonka made the cut. So far The Last Picture Show has eluded me. The library, netflix, and TCM of all failed to fix this for me.
