Diary of a Mad Black Woman - I hate Tyler perry, but this is his first and he obviously found an audience. I see where you're coming from but...it feels wrong. I like it, but if we're talking Spielberg films which address post 9/11 anxieties made in 2005, we gotta go Munich. Interesting choice. What's your argument for for it?

Brokeback Mountain: Cultural touchstone Munich: The best examination of terrorism and counter-terrorism in since 9/11 Batman Begins: Popularized the reboot The 40 Year Old Virgin: Ushered in a new era of R-rated comedy The New World: Probably the best depiction of the early encounters between European and Native Americans on film.

McCarthyism hasn't been as relevant since its time than the media's cheerleading of Bush policies in Iraq when Good Night and Good Luck came out. Differing opinions were loudly shot down, and the movies message is extremely pertinent to the time.
Amusing too that moviegoers' complaints were that the guy playing McCarthy was too over the top and theatrical when they were using archival footage.

It feels like we're missing something though... While you guys were busy masturbating to The New World, you forgot about Jarhead. The first American war movie to depict machines becoming more important than humans. I know people in the military and they say that next to Saving Private Ryan, it's the most accurate war movie they've ever seen.

I didn't think anyone else would go for The New World, I mostly just nominated it because you get really pissed off every time I nominate a Malick film. I'm glad it worked out. For 1980 Raging Bull: No brainer The Shining: No brainer Heaven's Gate: The infamous film that killed the New Hollywood 70s. The Empire Strikes Back: We did let Return in The Elephant Man: Important early Lynch, major leap forward in film makeup

Heaven's Gate: The infamous film that killed the New Hollywood 70s. No. Jaws and Star Wars killed "70's Hollywood." Heaven's Gate temporarily stopped Hollywood from funding 3 hour long movies with a big budget. And as we all know, that's what Hollywood specializes in these days. It's commonly accepted that Dances With Wolves brought back the Heaven's Gate type movies. Now, of course, you ain't wrong in one aspect. Heaven's Gate is definitely important. The question is, HOW important? 10, 15 or even 20 years ago I would have definitely put Heaven's Gate in this list. Now? I don't know. 1980 was so long ago... and Dances With Wolves was so long ago... that it doesn't really matter anymore. Heaven's Gate feels like a hiccup.

I'm thinking it could be a stand-in for a number of coked up over-ambitious movies like 1941 and New York New York that collectively made Hollywood lose faith in auteur-driven cinema. If not for Heaven's Gate the studios may have just seen Jaws and Star Wars as one-off hits like The Godfather and The Exorcist.

1. Raging Bull: One of Scorsese's masterpieces and in some ways the final film of the New Hollywood era. 2. The Shining: The anti-horror film that became one of the best of the genre and one of Kubrick's most accessible films. 3. The Empire Strikes Back: Nearly matches the original for amount of iconic moments and is one of the most loved films of all time. 4. Airplane!: Very iconic comedy that is still reference often. 5. The Elephant Man: David Lynch's most mainstream film and the make-up is a game changer.

It collectively made Hollywood lose faith in auteur-driven cinema. Nah. Let's not exaggerate. The 1980's gave us movies like Amadeus and filmmakers like Oliver Stone. If anything... Hollywood had more faith in director back then than they do now. Look at the blockbusters we make now. They're mostly cookie cutter. Back then you had Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Ridley Scott, Richard Donner, Tim Burton and lots of other directors making auteur-like movies for Hollywood. The best we have now is Christopher Nolan.
