I think you may be confusing "important in the history of film" with "important among regular audiences". One of which is actually relevant and stays pertinent, while the other is a flavor-of-the-month. In fact, that's even more of a reason to include it. There are very few films that were doing this before Hiroshima, if any. QT, on the other hand, is just splicing and remixing old movies like a DJ. Resnais was utilizing this technique before anyone even really cared. Truth be told, using flashbacks to tell a story is WAY older than Hiroshima. The Three Stooges were doing this in the 1930's and 40's. And there's literally a Daffy Duck cartoon that uses that technique as well. I know it hurts for me to say that, but let's not forget that the entire plot of Christopher Nolan's Inception was stolen from a Donald Duck comic book.

Talk to any film scholar worth their salt and he or she will tell you in detail why Hiroshima Mon Amour was more important than pretty much every other movie from this year that's being discussed. Film Scholars/Teachers/Critics, people who wanted to make movies but didn't have the talent. Reality is, nobody cares about that movie. Ben-Hur is important because of cutting-edge technical work that inspired generations of actual filmmmakers. Sleepy Beauty is important because of cutting-edge animation that inspired generations of actual artists. Some Like It Hot is important because it's a great movie that inspired generations of actual comedians. The 400 Blows and Anatomy of a Murder are important because it explored relevant themes in adult ways and inspired generations of actual writers and directors to do the same. Hiroshima? Name me all the actual filmmakers who have cited it among their favorite movies? And don't start naming people who were making movies in 1959. Give me examples of directors from 2014. "I love the early Alain Resnais films. Those had a huge impact on me when I saw them. Hiroshima, Mon Amour and Last Year At Marienbad are both still astonishing to me to this day. There are more ideas in the first 15 minutes of Hiroshima, Mon Amour than in the last 10 movies you've seen. And he was, like, the first guy to do this stuff. You look at what he was doing and it's just jaw-dropping. I haven't done anything nearly that adventurous yet. But that's what I had in mind when we were making [The Limey]. I kept saying, "Look, if we do this right, it's Alain Resnais makes Get Carter." - Steven Soderbergh After about ten minutes of googling I was also able to citations from Martin Scorsese, Joachim Trier, Michael Haneke, David Lynch, Woody Allen, and Nicholas Roeg. Unfortunately, not all filmmakers are nerds like us who put up helpful lists of their favorite films so I don't exactly know with 100% certainly that, say, Christopher Nolan loves Resnais' work. However, it doesn't really matter, because even if certain modern directors hadn't seen it (and I think they have seen it) they still would have seen the movies it inspired. Movies like this generally don't just stop being important, they're building blocks and foundations .

Not all filmmakers are nerds like us who put up helpful lists of their favorite films Almost every director I've seen interviewed has mentioned the movies that inspired them. Martin Scorsese has talked about watching Italian movies on television. Quentin Tarantino has talked about spaghetti westerns and blaxploitation movies. Robert Rodriguez and Guillermo Del Toro have talked about John Carpenter. Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and John Carpenter have cited 50's sci-fi movies. Tim Burton, Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson talk endlessly about Universal and Hammer and Harryhausen. Brian De Palma is the biggest Alfred Hitchcock fan I can think of. The list goes on and on. The point is... I've never heard a director cite Hiroshima - ever. You mentioned Christopher Nolan? I've heard him reference Superman on many occasions. He even interviewed Richard Donner!

"Stolen" implies that Nolan was one day reading a Darkwing Duck comic, set it down, looked up and went "...yes!"

So...between the two of us it looks like we've settled on: 1. The 400 Blows 2. Anatomy of a Murder 3. Hiroshima mon amour 4. Some Like it Hot 5. Ben-Hur Let's see if anyone else agrees. So are we taking this one?

I think I'm okay with that. Not entirely sold on Anatomy.
I'll leave this year up until I get home from work today to see if there are any more heated opinions.

I honestly don't see a lot of worthy choices this year. However, these would be three that I'd choose:
Batman Begins The 40-Year-Old Virgin Caché

Batman Begins V for Vendetta Brokeback Mountain The 40-Year Old Virgin Munich
Serenity (perhaps there's something to say about a movie that fandom of a dead show led to. Also its a pretty awesome movie)

1. Batman Begins: Redefined the caped crusader, launched one of the most beloved trilogies of all time, elevated the genre, and is a continuing influence on the genre.
2. Brokeback Mountain: The controversy this arose alone would warrant consideration, but the way Brokeback Mountain transcended this and just became a great movie is a testament to the film's power and it's placement on the list. It's also the most mainstream and nuanced depiction of homosexuality in media that I can think of.
3. The 40 Year Old Virgin: Ushered in the era of Apatow comedy and made Steve Carell a star.
4. Munich: Tapped into extremely relevant themes of vengeance and the circular nature of violence. It may have alienated audiences, but that's only because it was the most bold statement to come out of American cinema in 2005.
5. Hustle and Flow: Alright, this is one of my more "out there" picks and I'm sure it will be ignored, but this is the first (and to my knowledge, only) great movie about hip-hop, and given how that was the dominant musical form of the decade, I think it should be considered.
Honourable Mentions:
Sin City: This was a big deal in 2005 and I unapologetically love it, but the recent failure of A Dame to Kill For proves how this didn't stand the test of time.
A History of Violence: It's a great film and a turning for David Cronenberg, but it seems more important for him as a filmmaker than for the larger filmmaking landscape.
Kingdom of Heaven: It says a lot about religious conflict, but as far as historical epics go, this pales in comparison to Gladiator (at least by the standards of the general consensus) and I think Munich is a better statement on similar contemporary issues.
The Constant Gardener: Another film I love, and while it does deserve credit for helping kickstart the John le Carre adaptations as well as for its nuanced depiction of Africa, but this film's legacy seems to be significantly lesser than Meirelles' City of God.

Also its a pretty awesome movie) V for Vendetta is 2006 and is in the list. As for Serenity, I get that it has a dedicated cult following, but the film is only really important to Firefly fans. It'd be different if it inspired a wave of cancelled TV shows getting film adaptations, but outside of this year's Veronica Mars, I can't think of any. Plus it's a pretty stupid movie

Batman Begins
Brokeback Mountain
Diary of a Mad Black Woman - I hate Tyler perry, but this is his first and he obviously found an audience.
War of the Worlds - the first action movie to address many of the societal post 9/11 fears. It gets better the more I see it.
Good Night and Good Luck
