Neverending likes to use the "how many people do you know that have seen *blank*" argument. Well, I know a ton of people who love Drive. Many who have said it's one of their favourite movies. Yeah... but you're 15 and your friends haven't seen many movies. So let me put it this way. Dracula agrees with me that Drive is nothing special. Let that sink in. Dracula agrees with me. If me and Dracula are actually agreeing on something, you know it's the truth. Tree of Life without a doubt. LOL. Please tell me all the movies that Tree of Life has inspired in the last 3 years. Please give me a detailed list. And you can't use the excuse that people like Tree of Life because that's a lie. The only people who championed Tree of Life are the snobs. Everyone else fell asleep watching that shit. When was the last time you heard anyone bring up Moneyball in a casual conversation?

Last week probably. But that may just be my friends. As for Tree of Life, I think that it will survive as a significant film. I mean, its not at the same as Tower Heist, but few are.

Yeah... but you're 15 and your friends haven't seen many movies. My friends may not exactly me film buffs, but they certainly saw a fair share in high school and if we're talking 2011 films, a.k.a the films of their generation, their insights might be more valid than you think. Let me put it this way, Dracula placed Drive in his fop five for most important, just like I did. Let that sink in. Every sports fan I know loves the film. Those same people forgot Tower Heist as soon as it was done. That isn't a movie that gets placed on an important films list. It's harmless fluff you watch on TV with your family because its inoffensive and unchallenging. Tree of Life is a movie that, no matter how you feel about it, you remember the experience of watching it.

If we're talking 2011 films, a.k.a the films of their generation, their insights might be more valid than you think. I remember in 1999 people at my school were saying that Three Kings was the 2nd greatest movie of all-time. The Matrix being the greatest, of course. So forgive me if I don't take the opinions of teenagers very seriously. If in the year 2021 your friends still consider Drive one of the greatest movies of all time, then fine, I will accept it as important. But in the meantime, allow me to be skeptical. With a disclaimer that he doesn't personally agree with it. He's just throwing it out there because 2011 was only 3 years ago and this whole debate is ridiculous. Canadians care about baseball? But here's the problem with your argument. Most people DIDN'T see it. People may have forgotten Tower Heist but at least they acknowledged it. Tree of Life did not get support outside of "movie buff" community. The average moviegoer did not see Tree of Life. So how can it possibly be "important" if people haven't seen it? Let THAT sink in.

You say that like Three Kings isn't a great movie. Anyway, the entire basis of my argument for Drive isn't that my friends like it, I was just using that as an example of a group of people who haven't forgotten the film. I also like how previously when you didn't agree with my choices, you'd ask me how many people I knew had seen them. Yet when I do know a ton of people who have seen a film, there opinions don't matter. So what? The fact that Dracula is lukewarm on Drive is irrelevant. He still acknowledged it as important. Some do. People who are actually passionate for cinema saw it and while the film is divisive, it's also hugely admired and loved by an audience. It inspired debate and passion. I think you're also being a bit hyperbolic about how little people saw it. The film made over $50 million worldwide, which isn't exactly a blockbuster, but people did see it. And the film definitely was rented/streamed a lot after its Oscar nominations.

Everyone else fell asleep watching that shit. When was the last time you heard anyone bring up Moneyball in a casual conversation? I agree with you that Drive is not an overly good movie and would have prefered that it been dismissed as the shallow excercise in style over substance that it is... however, I feel like I've been outvoted by the film community at large. As such I will be neither arguing for or against it in this deliberation. In fact there's only one movie in this thing that I will be fighting for is The Tree of Life, another movie that I actually think has problems but whose place in history seems a little more clear. Given that it generally takes more than three years to get a movie made the full extent of its influence hasn't been seen yet but its effect can almost certainly be seen in Beasts of the Southern Wild, Upstream Color, and Man of Steel. Last week probably. But that may just be my friends. As for Tree of Life, I think that it will survive as a significant film. I mean, its not at the same as Tower Heist, but few are. More people saw Tower Heist than Tree of Life. Let that sink in. Tree of Life made about fifty million worldwide and Tower Heist made about one-hundred and fifty million, so yes, almost three times as many people saw Tower Heist... but here's the thing... the people who went to see The Tree of Life actually remember it. It doesn't matter anyway because... once again... this is a list of the most important movies and not the most popular movies. Put it another way, in 2011 Dan Shechtman won the nobel prize in chemistry for the discovery of quasicrystals. I don't know what a quasicrystal is and I bet I couldn't find ten people who do either, but that doesn't change the fact that this was an important discovery.

The Matrix and Three Kings... both movies that will almost certainly be in discussions for the five most influential movies of 1999 when we get to it.

Its effect can almost certainly be seen in Beasts of the Southern Wild and Upstream Color So it influenced other movies that most people didn't watch? That's your argument? Man of Steel is more Michael Bay than anything else. Let's not kid ourselves. We can badmouth Michael Bay all we want, but there's no denying that his visual style and love of mayhem was a direct influence on Zack Snyder, J.J. Abrams, Peter Berg and other blockbuster filmmakers. The Matrix will definitely make the list, but I'm not so sure about Three Kings. 1999 is a heavy duty year.

Dracula. Buddy. I hate to burst your bubble. But... Michael Bay did it first Michael Bay has certainly drawn influence from Malick's earlier films at times. I don't know that that clip really proves much of anything. Ian, where do we stand at this point? I might be modifying my ballot to the situation.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes X-Men is more important. In an era where studios are rebooting every franchise, and the Apes count in that category, X-Men DARED to march on and succeeded.

I'm honestly fine with either making it. I went with Apes because X-Men and X2 are strong candidates for their respective years and I don't know if we needed three X-Men films making the list.
