I'm not so fine with X-Men. Making a prequel instead of a reboot might be a little against the current trend, but to call that "important" strikes me as a little bizare, especially given that not very many series seem to have followed its lead. I quite like the movie, but in the grand scheme of things it's a minor work.

On the other hand, First Class can maybe be seen as a boost for the careers of Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender, both of whom are on the A-list nowadays. I know Lawrence got recognition a year earlier for Winter's Bone, but First Class can be seen as firmly placing her in the mainstream consciousness, before The Hunger Games came around.

Jennifer Lawrence was already an Oscar nominee in 2011 and had already been cast in The Hunger Games when the movie came out. Her rise was inevitible. Fassbender probably did see his mainstream star rise from it, but his subsequent career hasn't exactly been wildly mainstream since then, he's mostly been keeping up with what he's been doing.

Whatever. See, this is why I've mainly been avoiding participating in this thread.
Also, I'll get behind those rallying for Deathly Hallows Part Two; end of a significant franchise, a movie event for many, left a hole Hollywood's been trying to fill since, etc.

This is a pointless debate. 2011 was only 3 years ago. No movie is technically important yet. So let's just make everyone happy.
Contagion Drive Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 The Tree of Life X-Men: First Class
Ian, tomorrow is Thanksgiving in the United States. So... pick a new year now or wait till Friday. Your call.

I don't really understand why Contagion is on the list over something like A Separation, which is arguably one of the most successful Iranian films to be released, both commercially (it made $7.1 million in the U.S.) and critically. Not to mention it's just a plain better movie. Don't get me wrong, I really like Contagion (I even own it), but calling it one of the most five important movies of this year is kind of eh.

Whatever. See, this is why I've mainly been avoiding participating in this thread. You shouldn't be afraid to speak up. The whole point of this thread is to generate conversations between each other as we try to reach a common ground. It's good to hear from everyone, even if you get shot down every once in a while.

Neverending's list sort of looks like a decent concensus from what we have. And I agree that A Separation needs to be included.

I'd take Contagion over X-Men, honestly, but just because I like it more. I don't really see X-Men's importance, outside of kick-starting an already well-established franchise.

Don't be assholes. I left Drive for PG Cooper and Deexan. I gave Tree of Life to Dracula. I left Harry Potter for MovieBuff. And I gave A Separation to iverdawg. So don't be greedy. At least leave X-Men for me. Sheesh.

Keep in mind that it has only been 3 years. Another movie about plagues may come along and make Contagion irrelevant. Terence Malick may come along and make a movie that's way better and more important than Tree of Life. Maybe your teenage friends will stop caring about Drive. Maybe Iran will make a movie that people in America actually watch. Anything can happen from here till 2021. But you know what will be around in 2021, with absolute certainty? X-Men. They've been relevant since 1963... so chances are people will still be watching and discussing X-Men in 2021.

If anything this makes your argument less valid as you're saying the movie is only relevant in relation to the franchise and not on it's own merit. You can also stop making passive aggressive digs about my age at any point.

This makes your argument less valid How? From day one I pointed out that X-Men took a risk by continuing the series despite people hating the three previous movies. And not only did it work, but it also paved the way for Days of Future Past and Apocalypse. See... you wanted the apes even though that was the SECOND reboot in 10 years. That's the era we live in now. Planet of the Apes got rebooted two times in 10 years. Think about that. What X-Men did should be an inspiration for future franchises. Will it be? Well... I don't know. It has only been 3 years.

I'd be okay ditching Harry Potter too, if people aren't willing to let go of Drive.

I'd say Harry Potter was more significant than Drive.

I'd say drop Harry Potter... there were eight of them and it wasn't in and of itself any more notable than the other seven aside from the fact that it happened to be the last. We already had Soercerer's Stone in for 2001, I think that represents the whole series, that should be good enough. That said, I do think it's more significant than X-Men First Class, but I wouldn't want to hurt Neverending's feelings.
