Didn't think you were lying, I had just remembered it as 1984. Anywho, I don't see why that can't qualify in an admittedly lacking year.

Well, i'd probably choose Right Stuff. I think we can settle on Scarface A Christmas Story Videodrome Return of the Jedi The Right Stuff I still think we should have an actual comedy like Trading Places, The King of Comedy or Vacation but I don't see anyone else backing me up.

Yeah, that's pretty good. Though I think you guys would be surprised to how many "normal" people have never heard of Videodrome.

I think we can probably agree on those five. Shall we put it to a vote? All in favor say "Aye."

Works for me.
Next year: 1934
The Thin Man is one I'm thinking of off the top of my head.

The National Film Registry says
Imitation of Life It Happened One Night It's a Gift Little Miss Marker Punch Drunks Tarzan and his Mate The Thin Man Twentieth Century
I say
It Happened One Night The Thin Man Cleopatra Little Miss Marker The Man Who Knew Too Much
It should also be pointed out that 1934 is the year that The Three Stooges' Columbia series began. So I would add
Woman Haters Punch Drunks (preserved by the National Film Registry) Men in Black (Oscar nominated) Three Little Pigskins

The Man Who Knew Too Much: No brainer, it was Alfred Hitchcock's breakout film and it set the template for his long and influential career.
L'Atalante: Probably a no-brainer. An undisputed art-house classic which had a major influence on the French New Wave and by extension the rest of cinema and it showed up on the Sight and Sound list twice. Personally I don't quite see what all the hype is about, but it's certainly a very creative and well shot film for its time and showed a maturity that a lot of its peers didn't.
It's a Gift: The best feature length showcase of W.C. Fields' comedy.
The Scarlet Empress: One of the last pre-code films and something of a last hurrah for the laxer censorship of the era. An excellent Marlene Dietrich showcase and probably Josef von Sternberg's last great film.
The Thin Man: Classic example of screwball comedy whose combination of comedic antics with a compelling mystery would be copied.
Honorable Mentions: It Happened One Night: Very enjoyable movie, but I feel like there are better examples of screwball comedy out there.
Our Daily Bread: Probably more interesting than it is important. One of Hollywood's more direct responses to The Great Depression and shows people struggling to remove themselves from society and set up this commune type thing. It's one of King Vidor's best films and it ends on this exciting sequence where they're desperately trying to divert a stream into an irrigation canal.

It Happened One Night The Thin Man The Man Who Knew Too Much Cleopatra
Thin Man is toughest call, because it is a movie I really enjoy and that might make me give it more credit than it deserves. Treasure Island should probably be in the conversation, since it was a match made in heaven with a big adventure story being directed by Victor Fleming.
I have never seen It's a Gift, Little Miss Marker, or Twentieth Century. Are they worth a watch?
And personally I didnt enjoy It happened One Night. Humor is very dated and story/characters aren't entertaining for a comedy. But can't deny the impact it had on the future of comedy in both TV and in Movies.
And I am a bit biased against Imitation of life. My mom made me watch it when I was really little and somehow it always left a bad taste in me. Though I would say it is a good movie

of course, L'Atalante isn't available on netflix. Scarlett Emperess is number 55 in my queue. I should push that one up, considering I have a bunch of "meh" in my top 20.

The Man Who Knew Too Much: No brainer, it was Alfred Hitchcock's breakout film and it set the template for his long and influential career. His breakout films were The Lodger in 1927 and Blackmail in 1929. Although you can argue that The Man Who Knew Too Much launched his legacy since that was the beginning of Hitchcock being branded as "The Master of Suspense."

1. The Man Who Knew Too Much: A breakthrough for Hitchcock that sets the tone for much of the rest of his career. The film is also very entertaining and still holds up today.
2. The Thin Man: A lot of 1930s sound films have a sort of stiff and awkward tone. Not The Thin Man. Fast paced and a lot of fun.
3. It Happened One Night: It winning the "top 5" Oscars is historic and the film has some pretty iconic moments, notably the hitch-hiking scene.
Those are the only films I've seen worth mentioning.

Zero for Conduct is definately worth watching, I might like it better than L'Atalante. It's got an anarchistic energy and a lot of stuff you wouldn't expect from a movie from the early 30s. Not sure about the other one.

I think It Happened One Night has to be included. Its a pretty massive movie from that time.
The Man who knew too much as well. I think I'm going to take Drac's word on L'Atatlante.

I'll also say Cleopatra. And if any of you own region free Blu-ray players, Masters of Cinema have a great release of it in the U.K. Nice steelbook too.
