Rosemary's Baby If Rosemary's Baby wins, I will NOT support Chinatown in 1974. And trust me, 1974 is not one of Dracula's so-called "shitty years."

1. The Searchers: Iconic Western that has influenced films within it's own genre and beyond. It's earlier examination of racism is also pretty bold, even if it can be a bit clumsy.
2. Invasion of the Body Snatchers: Iconic science-fiction film and a perfect embodiment of cold-war paranoia.
3. The Red Balloon: Very famous, highly acclaimed, and the only short film to win the Oscar for Best Original screenplay.
4. Giant: A big hit in it's day that was very successful with both critics and audiences. In fact it was Warner's highest grossing film until Superman. Also notable for themes of racism and it seems to have been fairly influential moving forward.
5. Forbidden Planet: Inspiration for Star Trek, and it's been referenced openly by a number of sci-fi films and shows. It's also apparently the first science-fiction film were humans travel through space in a ship of their own construction and the first that takes place entirely on an alien planet far from Earth.
Honourable Mentions:
The Killing: A breakthrough for a young Stanley Kubrick.

What about Ten Commandments?
Also, you know what's cool about The Red Balloon? The director was also the designer of Risk.

1. Invasion of the Body Snatchers - Essential cold war science fiction. 2. Forbidden Planet - Breakthrough intellectual science fiction. Influenced Star Trek. 3. The Ten Commandments - Kind of a big deal. 4. The Searchers - Had that neat shot with the door and west. 5. The Killing - Needed a fifth one. Not good enough Hitchcock choices.

The Searchers: One of the first "dark westerns" and generally one of the most famous movies of all time.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers: A super famous allegory that got remade a million times.
A Man Escaped: One of Robert Bresson's most accessible movies and just a generally awesome example of what can be done with few cast members and limited sets.
The Ten Commandments: An early example of a big budget effects spectacle.
On the Bowery: An early example of the melding of fiction and documentary which used non-actors and real locations to paint a picture of a segment of society.

Technically La Strada was 54. We considered it and opted for Carmen Jones instead.

National Film Registry recognizes it, but as a 57 release.

Alright, looks like it's listed as '56 on IMDB because it premiered at the Venice Film Festival that year but didn't get a New York release until March of '57. Disqualify it if you have to, I wasn't too hopeful about it making the cut anyway, it is kind of obscure.

Okay, so The Searchers is pretty clearly in. Same with 10 Commandments. Also Forbidden Planet and Body Snatchers.
Other options: Giant (the Oscar winner that year and in the AFI), A Man Escaped, The Killing, The Red Balloon.

I think A Man Escaped should be in. We should have at least one Robert Bresson movie in one of these years and I think that's the obvious one to go with.

I'll go for it. There's ample opportunity for Elia Kazan other than Baby Doll
