5. Rosemary's Baby: One of the most respected horror films of all time, and one that can be seen as a precursor to other Satanic horror films like The Exorcist and The Omen. So your argument is that Rosemary's Baby is well-liked and paved the way for The Exorcist and The Omen. Okay... in that case... what about Steve McQueen's Bullitt? It's respected too. It paved the way for The French Connection and Dirty Harry. It set the standards for car chases in action movies. So... again... are you REALLY that passionate for Rosemary's Baby? You think we can have a serious dialogue about The Producers? Or should I continue attacking Planet of the Apes? Your choice.

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey: Often imitated never duplicated. Pretty much every film post-2001 has been inspired by it to some degree or another, but no film has ever come close. There's nothing else quite like it. 2. Night of the Living Dead: Zombies may have evolved over time, but the core aspects of the creatures all started here. Beyond the zombies, the film also influenced horror due to the gore, low-budget, and isolated setting. 3. Planet of the Apes: Launched a massive franchise which is still going strong today and has one of the most iconic endings of all-time. 4. Once Upon a Time in the West: Leone's most beloved film may be The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, but this might actually be his best work. It's mature, elegant, and many directors have declared the film an influence on their own work. 5. Rosemary's Baby: One of the most respected horror films of all time, and one that can be seen as a precursor to other Satanic horror films like The Exorcist and The Omen. That would also be my vote HOWEVER, I checked and it looks like Once Upon a Time in the West is only 1968 because it opened on 12/21/1968 in Italy and it opened in the rest of the world in 1969. So, I resolve that we move OUTITW to 1969, which should leave room for The Producers and end the debate amicably.

I resolve that we move OUTITW to 1969, which should leave room for The Producers and end the debate amicably. I guess we can agree with that, but keep in mind that we left out The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly from 1967 for the opposite reason. We're getting a little "too cute" with the release dates of these foreign movies. But whatever, if PG Cooper really believes in Rosemary's Baby, I'll agree to it.

I say we streamline this release date business now and say original release in country of origin, which keeps OUATitW in 68.

You've made your case about The Producers and you've got support from others too. I don't see why you're attacking me now. I'm okay with it making the cut I guess, but I stand by Rosemary's Baby as my fifth choice.

I don't see why you're attacking me now. Sorry, Coop. No hard feelings. Let's drink Cherry Coke and watch Speed Racer and forget about all this.

I'm fine with The Producers as long as it replaces Rosemary's Baby. Cutting Planet of the Apes is absurd.
We wouldn't have M. Night Shyamalan without it.

Anyway, to expand on my argument for Rosemary's Baby; it's a critically acclaimed film from a genre that's rarely critically respected, it's one of the most famous films from a great filmmaker, and is still remembered today. It also seems to have had a pretty firm influence on subsequent horror films. The Producers may have been the film that launched Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder, but it doesn't seem to be as popular or loved as Young Frankenstein or Blazing Saddles (both of which I'm sure will crack the list for 74). Hell even Spaceballs seems to have more of a following. Like Jibbs said, if The Producers replaces something, it should be Rosemary's Baby, but I personally stand by my original list.

Hell even Spaceballs seems to have more of a following. The average 15-year-old may not care about The Producers, but it is generally considered one of the greatest comedies of all time. It won the Oscar for Screenplay. The American Government preserved it as culturally relevant. It was ranked 11th in AFI's Top 100 comedies. The Broadway musical broke box office records, swept the Tony's and is critically beloved.

Rosemary's Baby was ranked 9th on AFI's Top 100 thrillers. Just sayin' Mel Brooks WON the Oscar for Original Screenplay and Roman Polanski LOST the Oscar for Adapted Screenplay. Meanwhile, Stanley Kubrick won his only Oscar that year for the Special Effects in 2001. Both 2001 and The Producers, as well as Planet of the Apes, are in the National Film Registry. Rosemary's Baby is not.

I would also rather remove Apes than Rosemary's... is my "move OUATITW to 1969" solution still out of the question?

If we're going to be gridlocked like this, then I guess I'm okay with that. Here's a solution. Forget this Top 5 nonsense. It's obvious some years need more than 5 movies. 1987 needed more movies. 2007 should have had room for Knocked Up. And there's gonna be other years with this dilemma. So let's not restrict ourselves to 5 movies anymore. If the Oscars can expand to 10 movies, so should we.

Me too. It took over 80 years for The Oscars to ruin their 5 nominee streak.
